Lucas came to a halt and gently set Sloane down behind him, shielding her with his body. His gaze was sharp as ice, his voice low andmanding. “You really want to go to war with all of Stonebridge?”
The lead assassin froze for a second–then burst outughing. “Lucas, you think you can still scare me? Once you’re both dead, who’s gonna know anything?”
Lucas sneered, his eyes sweeping coldly across every man standing there. “I know exactly who your boss is. If you so much as touch either of us, by tomorrow, your families, your friends—even your employer–will pay dearly for your stupidity.”
The lead assassin’s grin stiffened. Hesitation flickered in his eyes. Lucas’s power in Stonebridge was unshakable, and everyone knew how ruthless he could be. Even someone hired for a job like this had no desire to end up dead for it.
“Boss, even if we let him go, what if hees after uster?” one of the men hissed, making a throat–slitting gesture. “Might as well finish the job.”
That pushed the lead assassin over the edge. His eyes turned vicious again. He clenched his teeth and growled, “Enough talk! I don’t care if God himself shows up -you both die today!”
Lucas’s expression turned stone cold as he stepped in front of Sloane. The lead assassin raised his gun–but before he could fire, another shot rang out, slicing through the night.
The man’s body jerked, then slowly copsed, a hole clean through his forehead.
Andrew had taken the shot. And with that, he took down two more assassins in rapid session.
The remaining assassins, seeing their boss killed, turned their guns and opened fire on Andrew and his team, triggering a brutal shootout.
Lucas had already pulled Sloane into cover the moment the first shot was fired.
The two sides were evenly matched. Bullets flew, shouts echoed, chaos reigned.

But amid the gunfire, one assassin crept around behind Sloane. His de gleamed in the dark as he raised it toward her back.
Sloane sensed the danger, but her body was too slow to react.
At thest split second, Lucas dove forward and shoved her out of the way. The knife plunged deep into his shoulder, and blood instantly soaked through his clothes.
“Lucas!” Sloane gasped, panic shing in her eyes.
But Lucas didn’t seem to feel the pain. He spun and smashed his fist into the attacker’s temple.
The assassin crumpled with a grunt.
Lucas clutched his shoulder, his face pale, but his voice steady. “I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
The moment the words left his mouth, he copsed.
Sloane’s heart sank. She dropped to her knees, fingers instantly pressed to his pulse.
Her brows knit tighter and tighter, her expression turning grim.
“He’s been poisoned…” she whispered, eyes clouded with fear. His pulse was erratic and weak–clear signs of toxic exposure.
She quickly examined the wound, only to find the flesh around it already turning ck. The skin had taken on an ominous purplish hue.
“There was poison on the de,” Sloane muttered through clenched teeth, fury and guilt churning in her chest. Lucas had taken that knife for her–and now he was poisoned.
Worse still, he already had residual toxins in his body. She’d been helping him flush it out for months, but the poison had never fully cleared.
