Sloane looked at Boston; a flicker ofplexity crossed her gaze. She was silent for a moment before speaking softly, “Boston, what happened with my mentor involves her privacy. It’s not something I can share.”

Boston’s expression darkened instantly, but he didn’t give up. Instead, he asked carefully, “Is she, is she still alive?”

His voice was barely audible, as if afraid to disturb something fragile. There was a nervous edge in his tone; his fingers curled unconsciously, eyes filled with hope and fear, like he was bracing for an answer he both longed for and dreaded.

Sloane hesitated, then slowly nodded. “She’s doing well.”

Boston’s body trembled. A wave of emotion swept over his face–shock and joy all at once. He opened his mouth, as if to say something, but in the end, he simply closed his eyes and murmured hoarsely, “Good, that’s good…”

Sloane pressed her lips together and said nothing. She wasn’t sure what kind of history Boston might’ve had with her mentor, but it was still a matter of personal privacy; she couldn’t say

    more.

Although her mentor had always chosen to stay hidden from the world, she’d never explicitly forbidden Sloane from mentioning her. That was the only reason Sloane had said anything at

    all.

Boston looked at Sloane, his eyes full ofplicated emotions and quiet hope. “Sloane, if you ever need anything, anything at all, just say the word. I’ll do everything I can to help you.”

Sloane nodded gratefully. “Thank you, Mr. Boston.”

He waved it off, his tone weary. “No need to thank me. It’s the least I can do.”

With that, he turned and walked out of the operating room. His retreating figure looked a little lonely. Sloane stared after him, her heart stirred by a mix of emotions she couldn’t quite

    name,

When Lucas woke up, Sloane was changing his bandages.

His eyes opened slowly; his vision was still a bit blurry, but it quickly settled on Sloane’s face. She had her head down, carefully tending to his wounds. Her movements were gentle and precise, as though she were afraid of hurting him.

“Sloane…” Lucas‘ voice came out hoarse and weak.

Sloane snapped her head up at the sound, her eyes lighting up with joy. “You’re awake! How do you feel? Are you in pain anywhere?”

Seeing how worried she looked, Lucas managed a faint smile. His voice was soft and warm. “I’m fine, just a little tired.”

Sloane let out a breath of relief, but her brows quickly knitted together. “You lost a lot of blood. You need to rest, seriously. No moving around for the next few days, and we have to take extra care with the wound.”

Lucas nodded, a trace of affection in his gaze. “Alright, I’ll do whatever you say.”

Sloane shot him a look. “I’m the doctor, you have to listen to me.”

With that, she turned away to tidy up the medicine bottles.

Lucas watched her back, his voice low and raspy. “Are you… okay?”

Her hand, holding a piece of equipment, paused for just a moment. Then she shrugged. “You saw me, I’m fine.”

She started cleaning up a little faster, speaking as she worked. “Next time, don’t be so stupid. They told you ito /icut your finger, and you just did it. What if they wanted your life instead?”

Lucas‘ deep ck eyes remained fixed on her; at her words, he merely pulled out a faint smile.

Sloane regretted it the moment the words left her mouth. Before Lucas could say anything else, she turned around and spoke with forced calm, “Alright, no more talking. Just rest.”

Lucas nodded, closing his eyes. “Okay, I’ll listen to you.”
