Whitney copsed to the ground, tears streaming down her face. She knew better than anyone -Larry never changed his mind. And this time, she was really finished.
Larry turned back to his desk, picked up the phone, and said coldly, “Come in and escort Ms. Whitney out.”
The secretary quickly entered, gently helping Whitney to her feet. “Ms. Whitney, let’s go.”
Whitney stumbled out of the office with the secretary’s support.
That same day, bodyguards escorted her onto a ne.
Butter, the bodyguards waiting to receive her overseas called Larry–they reported that Whitney had gone missing.
Whitney had no idea when she’d passed out. When she woke up, she found herself lying in a pitch–dark forest.
Towering trees surrounded her on all sides, their thick branches and leaves blocking out most of the sunlight. Only a few scattered beams filtered through, nding faintly on the forest floor. In the distance, the low growls of wild animals echoed—like something could leap from the shadows at any moment.
Her heart clenched, her entire body trembling.
“Help! Is anyone there? Help!” Whitney shouted, her voice ringing through the empty forest— yet no reply came.
The growling sounds grew louder, closer. Her heartbeat nearly stopped.
Rustle, rustle, irustle/ii! /i
Suddenly, nearby leaves began to stir. Something was moving inside.
Whitney didn’t dare make a sound, thinking silence might keep her safe.
Then, without warning, a wild boar lunged out from behind a tree. Its tusks gleamed coldly in the slivers of sunlight, and it let out a deep, menacing snarl.
Whitney’s pupils shrank in terror; her heart felt like it was about to burst from her chest.
“Don’t–don’t–don’te any closer!”

She bolted. The wild boar charged after her.
She fell multiple times, scrambling up each time and running again. Her shoes had long been left behind, and the sharp stones and dry branches shredded her feet, leaving them bloodied and raw. Every step sent waves of searing pain through her–but the instinct to survive wouldn’t let her stop.
Andrew gave Lucas a quiet update.
Lucas nodded with satisfaction, a cold glint shing in his lowered eyes. “Let her learn what real fear feels like.”
No one hurt Sloane and walked away unscathed.
Sloane entered the room to change Lucas‘ bandages. Andrew immediately stepped aside, his tone respectful. “Ms. Rivers.b” /b
“Mm.” Sloane set the tray down beside her. “If you two still have business, I cane backter.”
“No need. I’ve finished reporting—I’ll be leaving now.”
With that, he quickly slipped out of the room, closing the door softly behind him.
Now, only Sloane and Lucas remained.
Sloane walked to the bedside and bent over to check his wound, her voice gentle. “How are you feeling today? Still in pain?”
Lucas looked down at her, eyes soft. “Much better. It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
After examining the injury, Sloane gave a small nod. “Looks like your finger’s healing well.”
She felt a wave of relief. After all, Lucas had been injured because he’d rushed in to save her. If his hand hadn’t healed properly, she would’ve carried that guilt for the rest of her life.
Lucas had noticed it all. That was why he’d been so cooperative throughout the treatment—he just wanted to recover faster. He didn’t want Sloane burdened with guilt.
Samson had once said that guilt was the most powerful emotional leverage he could use.
But Lucas didn’t want that. His feelings for Sloane were pure and passionate. He didn’t want a love chained down by guilt.
Even the smallest trace of sorrow–he didn’t want it touching her.

“Alright.” Sloane looked up and noticed Lucas staring at her. Her brows drew together slightly. “What is it?”
Lucas smiled, the tenderness in his eyes spreading without him realizing. “Nothing. Just felt ia /ilittle stuffy in here.”
Sloane nced toward the window and said, “The weather’s nice today. I’ll take you out for a walk.”
“Alright.”
Lucas didn’t want to trap Sloane, but this, this was a good excuse to spend more time with her.
