Chapter 248 Absurd

    Chapter 248 Absurd

The car window slowly rolled down, revealing Lucas’s cold, chiseled face.

Sloane looked at him in surprise. “Lucas? What are you doing here?”

Lucas stepped out of the car and walked up to her. Even with Sloane standing on the steps, he was still taller than her.

“I came to pick you up.”

Sloane froze for a second, then nodded. “Oh. I’ll go get my luggage.”

Lucas was caught off guard by how readily she agreed. He had prepared a whole list of reasons -like “it’s not safe to stay in the dorm alone” or “campus will be empty over the holiday and it’ll be inconvenient.” He’d even been ready to bring up the medicinal herb cultivation if she refused.

But to his surprise, Sloane hadn’t even asked a question and agreed right away.

He stood dazed at the door until she returned, pulling her suitcase. Lucas quickly stepped forward to take it from her.

As soon as they stepped out of the car, the butler and Molly came hurrying out to greet them.

“Ms. Rivers, your room is ready. It’s been arranged just the way you like it. If there’s anything you’re not satisfied with, just let us know and we’ll change it right away.” The butler had already received Lucas’s instructions and prepared everything in advance.

Molly had looked after Sloane before, and now that Lucas had brought her home again, she was all smiles. “Ms. Rivers, whatever you feel like eating, just let me know. I’ll make it for you.”

Sloane nced up at Lucas, then smiled and said, “Okay.”

“Your room is still upstairs on the second floor. I’ve had someone take your luggage up,” Lucas added, motioning to the waiting staff.

A servant took the suitcase and headed upstairs with quick steps.

Lucas and Sloane were talking when suddenly, loud, hurried footsteps echoed from above.

Sloane turned toward the sound and saw Aubrey storming downstairs in a rage. Her face was dark as she marched straight up to Lucas and pped him across the face.

“You ungrateful brat! So you finally show your face!” she screamed. “You killed Mason! You’re not even human!”

Lucas didn’t flinch. He took the p straight on, a red handprint instantly blooming across his face. His expression darkened, barely restrained anger simmering under the surface.

But Aubrey wasn’t done. She clutched at Lucas’s shirt, shouting and tearing at him.

The servants who had followed along stood off to the side, unsure of what to do.

Just as Aubrey raised her hand again, Sloane stepped forward and grabbed her wrist, her tone calm but icy. “Aubrey, that’s enough.”

Aubrey was momentarily stunned. She red furiously, struggling to break free. “Who the hell do you think you are? You think you can interfere in Hawthorne family business?”

She raised her hand to strike Sloane, but before it couldnd, Lucas caught her arm.

His face was frighteningly cold, fury burning in his eyes. His voice was low but full of power. “That’s enough!”

Aubrey was stunned by his tone. Her hand froze midair, face shifting from rage to shock. “Lucas, have you lost your mind? You’d raise a hand to your own mother over some woman?”

Lucas let go of her arm, his voice icy. “Mom, have you thrown enough of a fit yet? I already exined Mason’s death to you. He brought it on himself. No matter how much of a scene you make, it won’t change anything.”

Aubrey’s voice shook with fury. “Mason was raised by me! He was like your own brother! He made a mistake, couldn’t you just forgive him? How could you be so cold and heartless? You’re not even human!”

Lucas’s face was steely, his tone resolute. “Mom, you know exactly what Mason did. He poisoned me. He tried to kill me. I let him go out of respect for you–I sent him abroad. He snuck back on his own. He brought this on himself.”

Aubrey red at him. “If you hadn’t been so obsessed with thepany, he wouldn’t have been desperate enough to take that risk. This is all because you couldn’t make room for him!”

“It’s just apany. What would it hurt to give it to him?”

Sloane couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Was this woman really Lucas’s biological mother? Mason tried to poison Lucas, and she didn’t care. Now she wanted Lucas to just hand over the entire Hawthorne business?

As Aubrey’s emotions spiraled out of control, Tessa slowly descended the stairs with the help

    of her cane.

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it carried unmistakable authority. “You’re the matriarch of the Hawthorne family. Making a scene like this–what kind of example are you setting?”

Aubrey pulled back a little at the sight of Tessa but remained defiant. “Mom, did you see what Lucas did? He raised his hand to me over this woman! And he killed Mason! You’re really just going to let that go?”

“Lucas is the legitimate heir of the Hawthorne family, the rightful sessor to our enterprise. Everything he does is for the future of this family. As for Mason, he was ambitious and treacherous. He dared to poison Lucas. His actions crossed the line, and he got what he deserved.” Tessa had harbored resentment toward Mason for a long time.

She moved closer, her sharp gaze cutting straight through Aubrey like a de. Aubrey instinctively shrank back.

“If you still want to be the Hawthorne matriarch, you’d better behave yourself.” Tessa mmed her cane on the floor with a heavy thud. “If you keep stirring up trouble like this, I don’t care if I have to offend the dead–I’ll throw you out myself!”

Aubrey’s face went ghostly pale. Her body trembled. She never imagined Tessa would say something so final.

“Take the madam back to her room,” Tessa ordered the butler, not even bothering to listen to

    more excuses.

Sloane noticed the unwilling look in Aubrey’s eyes and frowned.

“Lucas, you’ve been through enough,” Tessa said, heart aching at the sight of the red mark on

    his face.

Lucas remained calm. “I’m fine, Grandma.”

He had long since gotten used to all this. But…

He lowered his eyes, ncing at the silent Sloane. His gaze darkened.

Tessa followed his line of sight and looked at Sloane. Her eyes softened with kindness, “Ms. Rivers, I’m sorry you had to witness that. This is Hawthorne family business–you shouldn’t have been dragged into it.”

Sloane offered a small smile, her voice steady and understanding. “Tessa, you don’t need to apologize. Every family has its troubles. I understand. I won’t speak of this to anyone.”

Tessa looked at her with admiration and said warmly, “Ms. Rivers, you really are a wise young woman. Lucas is lucky to have you.”

“Grandma, Sloane just got here. Let her rest for a bit,” Lucas quickly cut in, afraid Tessa might say something that would make Sloane misunderstand.
