“Oh, right. Go ahead and take Ms. Rivers upstairs to rest first,” Tessa said with a cheerful smile.

Then she turned to Sloane and added, “Ms. Rivers,e keep mepany for a chat when you have time.”

    Sloane smiled and agreed, “Sure.”

After Tessa left, Lucas led Sloane upstairs, feeling a little uneasy. “Sorry you had to witness all that…

Sloane turned her head and nced at the red mark on his face. Her chest tightened inexplicably. “It wasn’t your fault. You don’t need to apologize.”

Lucas stopped outside the door to her room. Sloane looked back at him and said, “Come in. I’ll put some ointment on it for you.”

Lucas froze for a second, then nodded and followed her inside.

Sloane took out the ointment she always carried with her and motioned for him to sit on the sofa.

Once Lucas sat down, Sloane stood in front of him, lifted her hand gently, dabbed a bit of ointment with her fingertip, and carefully applied it to the swelling on his face.

Her fingers brushed lightly against his cheek, and though the cool sensation of the ointment spread through his skin, it couldn’tpete with the warmth rising inside him.

Lucas tilted his head back slightly, eyes fixed on her face. Hershes were lowered, casting faint shadows beneath her eyes. The tip of her nose was delicately upturned, and her lips pressed together gently, her expression focused and serious.

Her breath brushed softly against his cheek, carrying a faint scent–like flowers, or maybe just something unique to her.

The air in the room seemed thinner, and time itself slowed. Lucas’s heartbeat quickened involuntarily, a surge of emotion threatening to escape. His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly as he spoke, his voice hoarse, “Sloane…”

Sloane’s heart skipped a beat. Her fingers trembled slightly without her realizing it.

She straightened up and looked at Lucas calmly. “What’s wrong?”

Lucas looked into her clear eyes. He opened his mouth–his feelings surging to the edge–but in the end, he swallowed the words back down.

He stood up. “Nothing. You should rest.”

He practically fled from her room.

Outside the door, even as he tried to suppress it, Lucas couldn’t calm the pounding in his

    chest.

“Not yet. Just wait a little longer,” he muttered to himself.

Inside the room, Sloane looked down at the ointment still on her fingertips. She rubbed her fingers together absentmindedly, her lowered eyes hiding the emotions within.

That evening, Molly came to call Sloane down for dinner. When she didn’t see Lucas, she asked casually, “Where’s Lucas?”

Tessa chuckled and replied, “He got a call and left. Said there was something urgent at thepany and told us not to wait for him.”

“He’s always like that. Once he gets busy, even I barely see him,” Tessa sighed, her tone tinged with concern. “His father passed early, and I couldn’t help much. He’s had to shoulder everything himself.”

Sloane was about to say something tofort her, but the olddy moved past the sadness on her own. She waved her hand dismissively. “Forget it, no point talking about him. If he’s not back, we’ll eat without him.”

She smiled and pointed at the dishes on the table. “These were all made by Molly under Lucas’s instructions, tailored ito /iyour tastes. Try them and see if you like them.”

Sloane looked at the spread on the table–everything was exactly what she usually liked to eat. She hadn’t expected Lucas to pay such close attention to her preferences,

She picked up a fork, took a bite, and after savoring the taste, smiled at Tessa. “It’s delicious.”

Tessa nodded in satisfaction, her eyes full of affection. “d you like it. Lucas might not say much, but he’s very thoughtful. He told Molly that you’ve had a hard timetely and need to be taken care of.”

Tessa was clearly doing everything she could to speak well of Lucas.
