Chapter 272 Nothing Left to Call Home
Madam Tessa had hoped to case the tension between mother and son, but Lucas shot her down with a single, icy sentence.
“She’s not my mother.”
To him, he’d never had a mother.
Madam Tessa let out a long, heavy sigh. She knew the bitterness weighing on Lucas’s heart, and it pained her that she could do nothing to help.
All she could hope was that Sloane would return soon. At least when she was around, Lucas could smile.
Lucas had been busier than ever-flying from one country to another, barely stopping. Samson and the others hadn’t seen him in three months.
The moment Samson heard Lucas was back, he went straight to the airport to catch him.
When he spotted Lucas dragging his suitcase out through the arrivals gate, Samson grinned and strode up with open arms, pping a hand onto Lucas’s shoulder. “Lucas! Finally! Come on, the guys are getting together tonight to wee you back.”
Lucas didn’t even slow down. He shrugged Samson’s hand off and kept walking.
“Not interested.” His voice was low and cold, just three curt words with no room for discussion.
Samson’s smile froze on his face. He hadn’t expected such a t-out rejection.
After a stunned moment, he caught up quickly, trying to smooth things over. “Come on, don’t be like that. It’s been forever since we all got together. Just rx a little, blow off some steam.”
Lucas didn’t even look at him. He dragged his suitcase around him and continued forward. “I have work.”
Samson hurried after him, shamelessly squeezing into the car. He muttered under his breath, clearly feeling wronged. “Now you don’t pick up calls, don’t answer messages, and you vanish for months at a time. You never used to be like this, no matter how busy you were…”
Lucas finally nced up from hisptop, eyes filled with cold irritation. “Keep whining and I’ll throw you
out.”
Samson shut his mouth immediately and zipped an imaginary zipper across his lips.
Silence filled the car again, broken only by the sound of Lucas typing.
Samson sat in the back seat, sneaking nces at Lucas. His profile was sharp and severe, brows faintly furrowed as he stared intently at the screen, pletely shut off from the world around him.
It left Samson with a tight feeling in his chest. He knew Lucas hadn’t had it easy all these years, and it was only after meeting Sloane that he started to seem even remotely human.
But now, just three months after she left, Lucas had grown even colder-borderline reclusive.

“Lucas…” Samson hesitated, then finally asked, “Do you miss Sloane?”

Lucas’s fingers froze over the keys. His gaze paused ever so slightly before his expression returned to its usual indifference.
He gave no reply-just resumed typing, as if he hadn’t heard a thing.
Samson’s heart sank. He’d quietly sent people to look for Sloane too, but no one had found anything. It was like she’d vanished into thin air.
He scratched his head, more frustrated than ever.
The car rolled to a stop at thepany entrance. Lucas stepped out without a word and headed straight for the building.
Samson jumped out, following a few steps behind. “Lucas, are you sure you don’t want toe tonight?”
Lucas didn’t slow down. His voice floated back, as cool as ever. “No.”
Samson stood there, watching as his friend’s figure disappeared behind the ss doors. Something twisted in his chest.
