“Ah!” Ginnie cried out, her voice sharp with pain. A flicker of fury crossed her face, but she quickly masked it. She looked up with glistening eyes and held out her hand, delicate and trembling. “Lucas… it really hurts. Can you help me up?”
Lucas stared down at her coldly. He didn’t move.
Then, a voice-cool, familiar-cut through the night from across the street.
“Lucas.”
His entire body froze like he’d been struck by lightning. He whipped around, eyes locking onto the slender figure standing across the busy road.
Sloane.
She wore a simple white trench coat. Her long hair fluttered-in the breeze. There was a faint smile on her lips, but her gaze was distant and cold-so piercing that no one dared to meet it directly.
She stood there as if she had just stepped out of a dream.
Lucas’s breath caught. His heart pounded wildly. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The woman he had yearned for night after night… was actually standing there, right in front of him.
“Sloane…” he murmured, his voice trembling.
He blinked hard, afraid she would vanish. But she didn’t.
Without hesitation, Lucas rushed into the street, weaving through the traffic like a man possessed.
His footsteps were urgent, heavy, like he feared, that if he didn’t reach her fast enough, she would disappear again.
“Sloane!” he called, his voice bursting with disbelief, joy, and raw emotion.
He stopped in front of her and reached out, gently brushing her cheek as if he had to confirm she was really there.
Sloane didn’t flinch. She simply looked at him, calm and unreadable, her expression filled with something moreplicated than words.
“It’s really you…” Lucas’s voice was hoarse, thick with longing and remorse.
“Of course it’s me. Sloane let out a/softugh, her toneced with teasing. “What, three years and you’ve gone dumb?”
Lucas could no longer hold himself back. He pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly, as if trying to merge her into his very bones.
“Sloane… you finally came back… Ifis voice caught, his arms trembling slightly.
Leaning against his chest, Sloane smiled faintly. A storm of emotion flis kered in her eyes. “Lucas, Fin

back.”
Across the street, Ginnie was still sitting on the ground. She watched it all unfold, her face drained of color
Her fingers curled into fists, knuckles bone-white. Her eyes burned with jealousy and unwillingness.
“Sloane…” she muttered, voice low and bitter, grinding the name between clenched teeth.
“Achool”
Sloane sneezed softly.
Lucas immediately took off his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders. “Are you cold? Come on, get in the car. I’ll take you home.”
He ushered her into the vehicle, but Sloane, everposed, tilted her head and pointed toward Ginnie still sitting on the ground. “What about Ms. Ginnie?”
“She has an assistant. Not our concern.”
Lucas didn’t spare Ginnie a single nce. He started the car and drove off, leaving her behind-stunned, humiliated, and furious.
A good distance down the road, Lucas finally spoke again. “Your apartment’s been empty for a while. I’ll have someone clean it tomorrow so you can move back in. But tonight…”
*Tonight I’ll stay at your ce,” Sloane replied casually.
“Okay.” Lucas turned the wheel into a smooth curve. The smile on his face never faded-not once.
He kept ncing at the rearview mirror, just to make sure she was still there.
