Chapter 289 Silent Distance
Lucas didn’t respond to Ginnie. His dark, intense gaze was fixed solely on Sloane.
But Sloane never once looked back at him.
Just then, Larry stepped forward and said, “Sloane, want to team up?”
She lifted her head and looked at him. “Sure,” she replied with a nod.

That one word hit Lucas like a blow to the chest. His heart sank, his brows furrowed, and his fists clenched slightly at his sides. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but when Sloane still didn’t look his way, the words stuck in his throat.
Ginnie stood beside Lucas, watching his every reaction. A satisfied glint shed in her eyes as she smiled sweetly and said, “Lucas, since Sloane’s already teamed up with Mr. Whitney, let’s go too. No sense wasting time.”
Lucas didn’t reply. His eyes remained fixed on Sloane, a heaviness pressing against his chest.
Meanwhile, Jill, seeing that Sloane had partnered with Larry, quickly ran over and said, “Then I’m joining you guys too. Three’s perfect!”
Larry smiled. “Sounds good. Let’s get started.”
Jill cast a smug nce at the remaining trio and raised her voice intentionally. “We’re totally winning this!”
Samson stood nearby, scratching his head in frustration. He had originally wanted this game to help ease things between Lucas and Sloane, but now it seemed he’d only made things worse.
Ginnie noticed and gently tugged at Lucas’s sleeve. “Come on, Lucas. Let’s not let them get a head start.”
Without a word, Lucas turned and wandered off in the opposite direction, his steps heavy.
The game was on.
Sloane, Larry, and Jill made a surprisingly effective team, quickly uncovering several of the hidden wine- themed items.
“Ha! Found another one!” Jill grinned triumphantly as she pulled a fake wine ss from behind a tree.
She nced admiringly at Larry. “Mr. Whitney, you’re really sharp. Where else should we look?”
Larry offered a small smile and scanned the area. With a teasing glint in his eye, he said, “I thought I saw something shiny under the grapevines over there. Want to check it out?”
Jill’s eyes lit up. “Seriously? I’m on it!”
She dashed off toward the grapevines, hunting eagerly.
Once she was out of earshot, Aarry turned to Sloane. His voice softened. “You seem a little off today. Dud something happen?”

Sloane paused, then dropped her gaze. Her fingers absentmindedly toyed with one of the found objects. “No,” she murmured.
Larry sighed. He could sense her walls going up again, but he didn’t push. “If you don’t want to talk, I won’t make you. But I’m here if you ever need someone to listen.”
His tone was warm and sincere, his eyes filled with quiet concern.
Sloane nodded slightly. “Thanks.”
They began walking again. Larry nced at her and said earnestly, “Sloane, you once saved my life. I would give mine to repay you if it ever came to that. I truly hope we can be real friends someday. Don’t shut me out forever.”
