Xandra Zane immediately stepped in front of Samantha like a bodyguard. “Sloane, don’t go too far. If you’ve got a problem, take it out on me. Stop bullying Samantha all the time.”
The others jumped in too, all using Sloane of picking on her.
While they were yelling, Samantha started crying, pretending to stop them and even saying a few fake nice things in Sloane’s defense–just enough to get them riled up even more.
Sloane stood there, face unreadable. She sometimes had to hand it to Samantha- the girl really had a gift for getting everyone to fight her battles while staying tucked away in the background ying the role of the sweet little angel.
…………
But Sloane wasn’t exactly the type to sit back and take it.
“Shut up, all of you!” she snapped, her voice slicing through the noise like ia /iwhip.
The crowd went dead silent.
Sloane’s gaze cut through the people and locked right onto Samantha. Her eyes were sharp enough to pierce skin. “Samantha, with acting skills like that, why aren’t you in Hollywood? All that crying–your whole performance–it’s just to stir them up against me. Doesn’t matter if they curse me out or swing at me. At the end of the day, they’re the ones who look bad. And you? You’re still the perfect, sweet little Samantha.”
Samantha’s face went white, panic shing in her eyes. She tried to y it cool. “Sloane, I… I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
Sloane waved her off and turned to the others instead. “She doesn’t get it, that’s fine. As long as you do. Don’t be idiots–don’t let yourselves be used as her pawns.”
A few of the girls around Samantha started looking awkward.
It was true. Their own reputations at school were getting worse and worse, while Samantha’s image just kept shining brighter like she was some kind of princess.
Samantha grew desperate “Don’t listen to her! I’ve always treated you all like

Sloane let out a shortugh. “Oh really? Have you ever stood up for any of them? Ever taken heat for someone else?”
Their expressions soured even more. The girl who had first stood in front of Samantha quietly stepped aside. “I’ve got stuff to do. I’m heading out.”
The rest followed her lead, each finding an excuse to slip away. In no time, Samantha was left standing there all by herself.
She froze for a moment, then suddenly covered her face and ran off crying.
p p p!
A girl stepped out of the watching crowd. “That was awesome.”
She looked about Sloane’s age, dressed in a cool, edgy style, and came right up to throw an arm around Sloane’s shoulder. “I can’t stand girls who cry all the time just to get sympathy. But you–I like your vibe. I’m Jill Besnard. Wanna be friends?”
Sloane nced at the cheerful girl, and the corners of her mouth lifted. “I’m Sloane Rivers. Samest name as Samantha. You still wanna be friends?”
Jill waved it off like it meant nothing, shing a bright, genuine grin. “Please. I like you. Who cares what yourst name is? After the way you shut Samantha down back there, there’s no way I’m inot /ibeing your friend.”
She scrunched her nose at the mention of Samantha. “Ugh, that girl drives me nuts, Always putting on that pitiful act to get people on her side. You finally gave her a taste of her own medicine. Anyway, were you here to take the test or waiting for someone?”
“Test. You?”
“Waiting,” Jill said as she craned her neck toward the exam hall, grumbling, “Why is this guy always so slow?”
Just then, a white figure appeared in the crowd. Jill’s eyes lit up and she waved excitedly, shouting, “Cameron! Over here!”
