Samantha had been leisurely practicing her dance routine at home when Helen came back much sooner than expected. Startled, she missed a step and fell t on the floor.
“Mom… why are you back so early?” she asked, gritting her teeth through the pain while trying to stayposed, forcing a smile to mask her panic.
Helen walked in and saw her dancing, her gaze falling suspiciously to Samantha’s ankle. “Didn’t you say you twisted your foot?”
Samantha leaned on a maid for support and lowered her eyes. “I did… but the school’s hosting a wee g next week, and I thought if I could win something, it might help salvage our family’s reputation a bit.”
“That’s a very noble thought,” said Marshall as he walked in. But the moment he looked up and saw Sloaneing down the stairs, his expression darkened. “Not like some thankless little wretch who can’t be taught loyalty.”
Samantha was secretly delighted by the jab, while Sloane walked right past them, pletely unbothered, and went to pour herself a ss of water.
“Aren’t you just back from visiting Boone? How is he doing?” Marshall asked, taking the teacup handed to him by a maid.
“Don’t even bring it up,” Helen said grimly. “I didn’t even get to see Boone.”
She’d gone to the psychiatric hospital where Boone was receiving treatment. The director had greeted her personally, polite and formal, but every time she asked to see Boone, he dodged with excuse after excuse.
Hearing this, Sloane blinked and let out a quiet, mocking smile.
Marshall set down his teacup and said thoughtfully, “This is a sensitive time. I suppose the director has his reasons for not letting you see him.”
Helen opened her mouth to say more, but Quinn came rushing in, visibly flustered. “Sir, Mr. Chandler is here.”
Marshall frowned. “Which vice principal? Why are you so worked up?”

All three were stunned, rising to their feet in disbelief. “Mr. Chandler? From Stonebridge University?”
Chandler wasn’t just any vice principal–he was the head of one of the four great families of Stonebridge. His influence in the city was enormous.
Marshall quickly pulled himself together, nerves and anticipation mixing in his expression. “Invite him in–no, I’ll greet him myself!” He hurriedly straightened his jacket andposed himself as best he could.
Chandler was soon led inside by Marshall. He wore a perfectly tailored suit, calm and poised, every movement radiating authority. Beside him stood a middle–aged man in a gray jacket.
Helen put on her most weing smile and personally offered tea. “Mr. Chandler! What a surprise! What an honor to have you here–please, have a seat!”
Once everyone was seated, the man in gray spoke up first.
“Mr. Marshall, we’re here to take someone with us.”
“Take someone?” Marshall looked confused, ncing between Chandler and the man in gray. “I’m not sure who Mr. Chandler and this gentleman are referring to….”
Chandler gestured toward the mani. /i“This is Mr. Samson from our university’sputer science department.”
“Ah, Mr. Samson! A pleasure, a real pleasure.” Marshall tried to be polite, but the confusion didn’t leave his face. “So who exactly are you here for?”
“Your daughter,” Mr. Samson said, sounding quite irritated. “What kind of parent are you? She scored 745 on the exam–top marks–and you’ve locked her up at home, not letting here to school?”
Marshall froze, utterly stunned as he stared at Mr. Samson. Then a surge of tion rushed over him.
Samantha scored 745? That was the highest score in years–perhaps ever! (D
