Sean and the others couldn’t even lift their heads after being chewed out by Mr. Samson in front of a freshman girl.

They quickly picked up on the subtle cues–this pretty new student clearly held a special ce in Mr. Samson’s heart.

“Hey there,” Sean said with a forced smile, trying to save face.

“Hello.” Sloane responded politely, then gestured to theputer. “Need some help?”

The group blinked. For a second, they all thought they were hearing things.

They’d been stuck on this for hours, pletely stumped, and now this freshman was offering to help? What was she trying to say–that they were useless?

“You serious?” John gave her a half–smirk, half–sneer. “We’re third–yearputer science majors. If we couldn’t crack it, you think a freshman can?”

Sean’s face darkened too, but out of respect for Mr. Samson, he held back from saying anything too nasty. “This isn’t a game. If you’ve got time, maybe go hit the mall with the other girls.”

Morgan, meanwhile, was stillpletely focused on the apple icon on the screen and hadn’t heard a word of the exchange.

Sloane could tell they’d misunderstood her, but she couldn’t be bothered to exin. She simply turned to Mr. Samson. “Mr. Samson, mind if I give it a try?”

“Go ahead.” Mr. Samson hadn’t known Sloane for long and wasn’t sure what kind of person she was, but she didn’t strike him as someone who talked big without backing it up. Maybe–just maybe–she really could do it.

He started to get a little hopeful.

Sloane sat down at theputer. Sean and the others immediately crowded around her, arms crossed and eyes skeptical. There was no way this girl could pull it off… right?

But then her slender fingers flew across the keyboard, strings of code flowing across the screen like cascading water.

As she typed, she exined, “This encryption method is a hybrid of several algorithms. It looks chaotic, but there’s a hidden structure to it…”

At first, the guys didn’t take her seriously. But as she typed line after line ofplex code and started tossing around technical terms only an insider would know, their faces began to change.

“The person who wrote this left a few misleading lines of dummy code, but the data transmission logic still follows a ssic encryption framework. I’m going to break it open from that angle.”

As Sloane worked, the edges of the apple icon began to flicker, tiny distortions rippling through the image. The unbreakable graphic was starting to fall apart.

Baylon and John stared wide–eyed at the screen, pletely in shock.

“It’s working!” John whispered, nearly shaking.

A few more minutes passed. Sloane hit Enter with a final tap, and the code shed. The apple image faded from the screen, dissolvingpletely. The desktop returned to normal.

“You did it!” Sean whooped. His face lit up with excitement and awe.

All their doubts vanished in an instant, reced by pure admiration for this ridiculously capable freshman.

John and Sean exchanged a long look, their eyes filled with a mix of awe and

humiliation.

Baylon grabbed Sloane’s shoulder, eyes sparkling like he’d just seen a goddess. “How did you do that? Can you teach me?”

Sloane flinched a little at the sudden grab. Baylon realized how inappropriate that was and quickly let go, apologizing profusely. “Sorry–so sorry–I just got excited.”

“Haha, don’t mind him. We’re just…pletely blown away by you.” Sean rushed to smooth things over.

John scratched his head, looking embarrassed. “Yeah… sorry for what I said earlier. I was way outta line. We totally underestimated you. Your skills are next level. We’d be lucky to learn from you.”
