CHAPTER 49: ON THE WAY TO THE MISSION

At the academy’s main entrance gate, a beautiful girl stood waiting for someone.

Not far from her, a boy with black hair leaned against the wall, also waiting.

But when his eyes landed on girl, his thoughts goes wild.

’No way... It’s Selena. The one I’m supposed to help? But she hasn’t said a word to me, just gave me a little nod...’

He prayed silently that it wasn’t true.

But then Selena pulled out her pager, checked a message, and turned her crimson eyes toward him. Her expression tightened. With a quiet sigh, she began walking in his direction, her steps slow but purposeful.

’Wait—why is she coming here?!’

Amon quickly masked his face with a sweet smile. When she finally stopped in front of him,

he greeted her politely and asked.

"Hello, President! Do you need something from me?"

Selena looked down at him, shaking her head with visible irritation.

"Really... That boy ditched me at the last moment. And he sent you instead?" Her voice was cold, laced with annoyance.

Amon gulped his saliva.

Yes.

He instantly knew who she was talking about.

’Damn it, Arnold... What did you do?!’

He scratched his cheek awkwardly. "I... don’t really understand what you mean, President."

Selena’s crimson eyes narrowed.

"I had asked Arnold to accompany me on a mission. But right before we were supposed to meet, he messaged me saying he couldn’t come because of some problem. Instead, he said you would accompany in his place."

She rubbed her temple, clearly displeased.

Amon cursed Arnold in his heart but forced himself to confess.

"Wait, but... Arnold met me last night. He asked me to help some girl, but he never told me her identity. He just said she’d explain everything in time. So it was you all along... But why did he only tell you now?"

Selena’s face darkened. Her red eyes flashed with anger before she calmed it in.

"That bastard really tricked me... He just didn’t want to come, so he dumped it on you and tell me at last movement."

Her words carried pure irritation.

Amon decided to probe further.

"President, you mentioned a mission. But aren’t those only available for second and third years? Why would you bring Arnold, a first-year, along with you?"

Missions were an essential part of the academy’s system.

From the second year onward, students were required to complete at least three missions per year.

These missions came from outside the academy—requests from villages and towns that couldn’t afford the Adventurer’s Guild fees or can’t arranged a reward.

They usually required small groups of three or four students.

Amon was well aware of this.

Selena’s gaze softened slightly, though her tone remained firm.

"I had my own reasons for including him. With proper recommendations and if someone takes responsibility, first-years can join missions as well. Arnold qualified since he’s already advanced to the Mana Initiate rank."

Amon nodded in understanding. His eyes lit up.

’So in short, I don’t need to be here. After all, I am only an Awakened—not qualified to accompany her.’

His lips curved into a hopeful smile.

"So... does that mean I don’t need to accompany you anymore, right? I mean, I’m weak, unranked, and definitely not what you were looking for. Plus, you had your own reasons for bringing Arnold specifically.Since he can’t come i don’t think you need me here."

Selena folded her arms under her chest, her expression thoughtful. After a moment, her lips curved into a faint smile.

"Since you’re already here, why not tag along? It won’t be that bad. You’ll gain some experience... and perhaps it’ll be entertaining to have you around."

The smile was beautiful, but Amon didn’t like it one bit.

"Well... but—"

Before he could finish, Selena grabbed his collar and dragged him forward.

"No buts. You’re coming along. That’s decided."

Her commanding tone left no room for argument.

Amon’s face fell in despair as he was pulled out of the academy.

’Damn it.I already took money from Arnold. Guess I have no choice but to help her now. Not that she’ll even need my help...’

Resigned, he followed her as they walked toward Elarith City, leaving Arcadia Academy behind.

"President," Amon finally asked,

"Where exactly are we going? And how?"

Selena glanced over her shoulder at him before turning her eyes forward again.

"A small town called Mistvale. It’s about a hundred kilometers from Elarith. Since it’s a small town, there’s no teleportation gate. We’ll take the train instead. I’ll explain the details of the mission once we’re in train."

The two entered the bustling city. Afternoon sunlight bathed the streets as crowds of people moved in every direction.

Merchants and shopkeepers shouted to sell their goods, children darted between the crowds, and carts mixed with mana-driven vehicles run down the main roads.

Amon walked beside Selena, sneaking glances at her from time to time. He was amazed at how naturally she moved through the city.

When he thought of princesses, he always imagined them strolling in elegant dresses, surrounded by guards, with citizens bowing wherever they passed.

But Selena walked like any ordinary person, her silver hair flowing behind her, crimson eyes scanning the path ahead.

’Now that I think about it... that night I saw her eating chicken skewers from a street stall. She’s not like the typical princess at all.’

Amusement flickered across his face as he studied her.

Noticing his stare, Selena raised a brow. "What is it?"

Caught red-handed, Amon quickly came up with an excuse. "Ah, nothing. I was just thinking... I should buy some things before we head to the station."

He wasn’t lying. He really did want to prepare.

Selena didn’t refuse. "What do you need?"

"Nothing much. Just some healing potions, a few bullets for my revolver, and maybe a small weapon... like a dagger, something that might come in handy."

She gave him a brief nod. "Practical choices. You’ll need them. We may have to fight monsters."

Amon swallowed but said nothing, following her through the busy streets.

"Let’s stop by the alchemy shop first, then the weapons store," Selena added.

He nodded obediently, though his thoughts wandered.

’I should buy the same things as last time... but this time, I’ll buy lot of healing potions. I’ve got money now, so I can afford it. And if things get tight, I can probably rely on the princess. No way she’ll let a poor guy like me suffer... right?’

He really believes that she will help.

But in reality he also knows that,

He could only hope.
