CHAPTER 279: UP ROAR

Things also turned chaotic when those rich people came out and began putting pressure on Representative Drayth. They all wanted the gem that came with it if he actually killed the boss of the Mind Stalk Apes.

Those in the Enchantments Guild also came out, as well as collectors.

Before he even attempted to kill the boss monster, the bidding had entered into hundreds of billions of coins. In fact, it caused a stir that rippled from district to district and spread throughout the two cities, even sweeping into the mountains.

Most people who did not know about the Mind Stalk Apes began to learn about them, and most importantly, they learned about the Dragon Hunters.

The bet that started in Stompire District spread to the other districts, and then like waves of locusts, it began to spread until it turned into something of great anticipation that even those in the mountains and far away began to monitor.

Of course, this also brought its own disadvantages, big and small. For one, their location had been revealed to those chasing them and to all those with shady characters.

But Vacuse wasn’t that concerned.

For one, the Dragon Hunters were much stronger than they were, and now that they were properly in Umbracrypt, the Eboncrypt wouldn’t be in such a hurry to do anything against them.

But the same couldn’t be said for those with shady characters, and that week when the news spread, robbers came to take what the Dragon Hunters had away.

They likely thought the hype around Vacuse and his Dragon Hunters was fake and generated just for the buzz to stir up the betting game.

They learned. They learned the hard way.

Vacuse personally went out that night to participate in the fight, and for minutes, the night air around their compound lit up with the clashes of magic.

And of course, the robbers lost each time. Vacuse didn’t spare any of them and hung their heads on the gate of the compound he was occupying, letting it serve as a warning to everyone else who might have the mind to try and rob him.

The investigation into the robbers revealed that they weren’t local bandits. They came from the edges of the Dark Wilderness, where they always looted the surrounding villages.

Vacuse knew it must be one of the bigger powers probing him and his Dragon Hunters since the investigation line was abruptly cut off.

Still, not all of the attention was bad. Some were just as beneficial as they were disadvantageous. For example, Vacuse was able to spread the fact that he was recruiting even wider, calling on all third-circle members to join his hunting group.

Also, he was able to leverage his new notorious reputation to buy things at slashed discounts, as everyone wanted to be nice to the new rising star of the hunting world.

Of course, everything going forward would be determined by the killing or not killing of the boss monster of the Mind Stalk Apes.

Lots of people were keeping eyes on them, and not all of them looked kindly upon him. They wouldn’t mind if he failed and they could absorb his men and wealth.

Of course, his attendants tried their best to talk him out of it. They gave all the reasons why it was dangerous and that if he should go, at least he should form a team just like before.

But just as they expected, Vacuse wouldn’t change his mind. And really, there was no reason to. The others would simply get in his way, as they would be taken over by the monster, and he wouldn’t be able to go all out for fear of harming them.

Just a few days before he went for the hunt, Representative Drayth organized a dinner party for him. It was as if he really didn’t expect Vacuse to return and wanted to do something nice for his latest bestseller before he disappeared.

Vacuse didn’t know if he should take offense or be amused by it, and in the end, he could only settle for something in between.

He took the idea from the representative and put up a party of his own for the rowdy Dragon Hunters. While he was at the dinner party with Representative Drayth, they would be busy with their own.

"Ah! If this isn’t the infamous Vacuse Vorrakyn! I must say, you have a really strange name!" a man said.

Vacuse turned around with his untouched glass of wine and smiled politely. He was currently at the party, dressed in a light red and black robe with earrings and gemstone rings on his hands.

The light in the hall was a dim red, casting everything in a lush reddish glow.

He looked toward the man who had just called the Vorrakyn name strange. "Oh? I’ve heard stranger names. What’s your name?"

The man’s eyes widened, and he answered on reflex. "Wh... my name? I’m Syrion. Syrion Syrion."

"What a strange name," Vacuse said with a sweetened smile. "So you are?"

"I am the leader of the Griffin Feather. I know you must have heard a lot about me."

"I’ve not heard anything about you," Vacuse said with a deadpan expression. "This is the first time I’m hearing about your strange name and the duck’s feather."

Those softly dancing around who heard Vacuse’s words suddenly froze. Their eyes widened in shock, and they stiffened. Since the party began, lots of people had been trying to strike conversations with him, and most of them were gently and firmly turned away.

Maybe if things were different, then Vacuse would have made efforts to build connections, but as it was, wasn’t he already planning to leave as soon as possible?

So he really didn’t care who he just offended. Besides, the guy also called his name strange.

Syrion Syrion smiled stiffly. "You haven’t heard of me? The Griffin Feather is one of the strongest in this district under and on the third circle!"

Vacuse raised his glass with a smile. "Is that so? Well, I’m sure I’ll see you around or something."

It was a clear dismissal, but Syrion Syrion didn’t think so.
