58: Chapter 58: Borrowing Clothes 58: Chapter 58: Borrowing Clothes Even though he had just been with Sunny Nguyen, the sight of Emily Jenkins’ bare body, especially the pair on her chest, made James Brown feel his blood rise and a certain part of his body stand at attention once again.

“Damn it, you little brat, can’t you make even a little noise at home?” James mumbled to himself and quickly tiptoed out of the bedroom, then also shut the bedroom door.

A beauty’s nude body might be nice to look at, but it would be so embarrassing if someone walked in on him.

After calming his breathing, James knocked vigorously on the bedroom door and loudly said, “Emily, are you awake?

I need a favor.”

It took calling out twice before Emily’s flustered voice came from inside, “Ah, Big Brother Brown, what is it?

I was still sleeping.”

James broke out in a silent sweat.

That girl could really sleep; he figured she wouldn’t even notice if he threw her out on the street while she was asleep.

It was hard to find such a girl in this world.

“It’s like this, my friend needs a set of clothes to wear, but no stores are open right now, and I have no place to buy any.

Her figure looks about the same as yours.

I was wondering if I could borrow a set from you, is that okay?”

“Okay, just give me a second, I’ll get it for you.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it.”

After waiting around five or six minutes, Emily opened the bedroom door wearing pajamas, her hair a mess and still yawning, holding a set of clothes in her hands.

“Big Brother Brown, see if this set works, I’ve only worn it once.”

James took it and said, “As long as it’s close enough,” and turned to leave.

But at that moment, Emily chased after him, asking with a grin, “Hey, Big Brother Brown, is that your girlfriend?”

“That’s… no, she’s not.”

“Ah, not your girlfriend, and yet you brought her home to sleep?

Oh, I get it, you’re playing the ‘one-night stand’ game.”

James broke into a sweat and said, “You guessed right.

These clothes may be a one-way trip, you’d better lend me something cheap, in case I can’t afford to pay you back.”

“No problem, I don’t really like this set much anymore.

It would just be a waste otherwise, so consider it a gift from me.

Now you’ve given me a reason to come over to your place for a meal.”

James stopped at the door and turned to look at Emily, “You don’t look down on me for ‘playing the one-night stand’ game?”

Emily laughed, “Why would I despise you?

It’s so common nowadays.

I just haven’t met the right one; otherwise, I would play too.”

James tapped her on the head, with a stern face, “Don’t be ridiculous.

That sort of thing isn’t something you just play around with.”

“Wow, so you allow yourself to do it, but you won’t let me even light a lamp?

Big Brother Brown, that’s not fair.”

“I’m just afraid you’ll get cheated.

Alright, I’m off.” James left Emily’s place, puzzling over his own concern for her.

She was just his neighbor, after all.

Shaking his head, James returned to his own place and tossed the clothes to Sunny coming out of the restroom.

“You really got them, impressive.

These aren’t new, where did you get them?” Sunny complimented James, but upon noticing the secondhand clothes, she furrowed her brows.

James responded irritably, “If you don’t want to wear them, then forget it.

I’ve got no other options.”

“Who said I won’t wear them?

I’m just not used to wearing someone else’s clothes.”

“Suit yourself then.” James finished and went to wash up.

When James came back out, he saw Sunny dressed in Emily’s clothes.

They were slightly loose on her, but since it was winter and everyone wore more layers, it didn’t look that improper.

Sunny glared at James and said, “These are from that female neighbor next door, right?”

James admitted frankly, “Yeah.

How else could I have gotten you clothes so quickly?”

“You seem to have a pretty good relationship with your neighbor, to be able to borrow clothes from her.”

James sensed a hint of jealousy in Sunny’s tone but ignored it, went back to his room to change, and then tidied up the bedding.

He was quite attentive to life’s details, and his place was rarely messy.

Sunny watched as James busied himself, her facial expression a bit odd.

In her former home, her ex-husband had never lifted a finger to do any housework.

Now, seeing this man, James, handling chores so methodically, she felt both novelty and a certain longing—an man who did housework must be a caring and good husband.

But then Sunny was immediately startled by her own thought.

She had just gotten divorced, so why was she thinking this?

Plus, she was very sad just the night before, to the point of going to a bar to drink her sorrows away.

But now, why was she not feeling that heart-wrenching pain, in fact feeling an inexplicable sense of relief instead?

Wasn’t this abnormal?

Could it be that she was developing feelings for James?

Sunny’s mind was bursting with question marks, but she couldn’t answer any of them.

Shaking her head vigorously, Sunny tossed those questions aside.

She just wanted to live freely, enjoy life on her own terms and not get involved in any romantic entanglements ever again—even if loneliness struck, a fling might suffice, but she couldn’t let herself be hurt by men again.

At that moment, James came out and seeing Sunny spacing out, he laughed and said, “What’s on your mind?

If we don’t leave now, we’ll really be late.

It’s no big deal for a low-level employee like me, but you are the chief director; being late would look bad.”

Sunny immediately smiled brightly and said, “Isn’t the chief director also human?

It’s normal to be late sometimes,” then she walked to the door to change her shoes.

Once in the elevator, with only the two of them, Sunny said to James somewhat awkwardly, “I’m not going to the company with you later.

In case someone sees us…

they might gossip.”

James replied cheerfully, “Understood, I wouldn’t walk with you together either without you saying so.”

Hearing this, Sunny felt inexplicably irked and glanced at him, “Am I such an embarrassment to be seen with at the company?”

James chuckled and responded, “Of course not.

If you went with me, I’d be the one getting all the face.”

“You see, you just think less of me because I’m a divorced woman,” she accused.

“Ms.

Green, you really think too highly of me.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been divorced once or even ten times—I wouldn’t look down on you,” he replied candidly.

Pinching James’s arm, Sunny retorted playfully, “Get out of here with that.

You’re the one who’s been divorced ten times, you just don’t wish me well.” Her tone was certainly flirtatious.

James pretended to wince in pain, making a bitter face, “I’m just saying you’re stronger than me.

Even if you’ve gone through ten divorces, it’s not like me, a…

what do they call it on the internet?”

“Losers!” Sunny corrected him, both annoyed and amused.

“Right, a loser.

I’m just a poor loser, and you’re a rich, beautiful woman; we’re not on the same level at all, so how could I have the right to despise you?”

“Humph, haven’t you heard of a loser’s counterattack?”

“Forget it, that’s just a beautiful dream for losers.

When have I ever seen a loser’s counterattack?”

“We are just…” The elevator doors suddenly opened on the sixth floor, and two more people joined them, cutting off Sunny’s words.

She had technically misspoken, and stopping there was a secret relief.

She was realizing how casual her conversations with James were becoming; it seemed she really had to keep herself in check moving forward.

She understood that James was continuously downplaying himself, which was his way of telling her that their time together was just a fling, nothing more.

Despite agreeing with James, Sunny felt an inexplicable sense of loss and self-pity.

After all, she was a divorced woman; it seemed that even a junior employee like James wouldn’t look up to her.

However, Sunny was no ordinary woman; she had her martial arts skills, and she had already adjusted her mood.

As soon as they left the elevator, she smiled at James and said, “Thanks for giving me a place to stay last night, but from now on, let’s just be normal colleagues.”

Of course, what James hoped for the most was just that.

He laughed and said, “Absolutely no problem.

At the office, you are definitely my director.”

Sunny felt a bit uncomfortable inside, but still smiled and said, “That’s best.”

Taking out his cigarette pack, James deftly flipped a cigarette into his mouth and lit it with a flourish, taking a satisfying drag with a look of utter contentment, “I also think it’s pretty good this way.

If you ever feel lonely, Ms.

Green, I’d be willing to be of service.”

Watching James smoke, Sunny had to admire his style, which was enough to attract young girls, let alone make her feel he looked quite handsome.

But seeing James’s enraptured face and his smile, why did Sunny feel so uneasy?

This guy didn’t care about her at all.

Was it because she was divorced?

Even a junior employee didn’t respect her.

“Ms.

Green, what’s wrong?

Are you not feeling well?” James asked with concern as he noticed Sunny’s chest heaving.

“I’m fine, I’ll head off first; you leave later,” Sunny said, quickening her pace in her high heels, without looking back.

James touched his nose, sensing Sunny’s feelings.

He was willing to keep the conversation going as it was.

Sunny’s attractiveness was not lost on him, and he did not look down on her for being divorced.

But when it came to matters of the heart, it was perhaps best to let it be.
