The Supreme Soldier in the City
Chapter 680 - 718: Workaholic Sunny Nguyen
CHAPTER 680: CHAPTER 718: WORKAHOLIC SUNNY NGUYEN
"Manager Johnson, thank you so much. Nancy’s father has been released." As soon as he arrived at work, Jack Carter excitedly expressed his gratitude to John Brown.
John Brown was slightly surprised. He hadn’t expected Jack Carter’s girlfriend’s father to be released so quickly. This was likely due to him talking to Helen Wilson, who obviously had some influence in the Public Security System now.
"That’s good. Are you and your girlfriend doing well?"
Jack Carter nodded repeatedly, saying, "Things have been much better these past couple of days, and because her dad was released, she’s even happier and not as upset as before."
John Brown patted Jack Carter’s shoulder and said, "Then take good care of her. The injuries a woman suffers can only heal quickly with the care of someone she loves."
"I know, I know. That’s why I wanted to switch shifts with you. This afternoon, I want to go with Nancy to accompany her dad to buy some things and dispel the bad luck."
"Alright, go ahead. Oh, by the way, aren’t you on the night shift today?"
"Yeah, I just came to get this sorted out first."
"You rascal, next time you need something, just call me."
It’s quite normal for security guards to switch shifts. John Brown initially wanted Jack Carter to swap his shift with someone else, but upon asking around, it turned out everyone was already scheduled, so he ended up covering the shift himself.
That afternoon, he mentioned it to Gina Lopez, who of course supported him. Coincidentally, she had no engagements that evening, so she could go home as usual and pick up their daughter.
The night shift required three people: John Brown, Qian Laoshi, and John Davis. The company had a rule that during night shifts, drinking was absolutely prohibited. John Brown didn’t break the rule and routinely patrolled inside the company. He was responsible for the top two floors, while the other two were in charge of the lower floors.
The light in the upstairs finance director’s office was on. John Brown casually pushed open the door and saw Sunny Nguyen intently focused on something.
"I’m working overtime, don’t mind me," Sunny Nguyen said coldly without even looking up, continuing with her work.
It was a critical time for the company, so she was incredibly busy. Plus, there was another matter on her mind; during this period, she felt rather lonely. When she first arrived in YODC City, although she was in a poor mood, John Brown’s presence helped her quickly get over the shadow of her failed marriage. But just as her relationship with John was heating up, he married Gina Lopez.
Although she wanted to maintain that kind of relationship with John Brown, even with Gina Lopez suggesting she help win back his heart, Sunny Nguyen was well aware of the perils of being the third party in a marriage. She didn’t want to ruin Gina Lopez and John Brown’s marriage, so even if she felt lonely, she didn’t want to seek out John Brown, even if Gina Lopez wouldn’t be angry.
Now, she just tried to focus on working hard, staying busy every day until exhaustion so she wouldn’t feel that loneliness anymore.
When working overtime, the security guards frequently came to check in. Sunny Nguyen was used to it. Today, she assumed it was a guard saying hi, so she casually said a word and continued working.
But after a while, she suddenly felt two hands on her shoulders. Her body stiffened as a thought crept up her mind: something bad would happen tonight, wondering which bold guard dared to make a move on her.
"Relax, I’ll give you a shoulder rub." Suddenly, John Brown’s voice came to her ears.
Sunny Nguyen’s once rigid body relaxed immediately. Without turning around, she leaned softly against the chair back, her head resting on John Brown’s chest, and lightly said, "It’s after work hours, why are you here with me?"
John Brown smiled and said, "Seeing you work so hard, I came to check on you."
"Don’t make it sound so nice; you should be with your wife. Oh, you must be covering a shift, right?"
"Ha... You got it right."
"Hmph, otherwise, you wouldn’t have thought of me," said Sunny Nguyen somewhat sourly.
John Brown lightly coughed. It was indeed hard to explain, and even if explained, there was no suitable reason, resulting in a moment of silence between them.
"Work isn’t something you can finish in a day or two. Don’t push yourself so hard. Rest when you need to." John Brown broke the silence.
Sunny Nguyen sighed and said, "I don’t have much going on. Having something to do keeps me a bit more fulfilled, otherwise facing an empty home every day would drive me crazy."
John Brown felt quite sympathetic towards Sunny Nguyen. This woman brought him joy when he returned to YODC City. Whether in bed or in other aspects, Sunny Nguyen was an excellent woman. He couldn’t help but reach for her face and said, "Sunny, change your mindset. It’s okay to have some fun."
Sunny Nguyen smiled slightly and said, "Never mind, in fact, work is quite nice. Watching the company get back on track, with such a promising future, is also very satisfying."
John Brown’s hand gently caressed Sunny Nguyen’s face as she chuckled softly and said, "It’s not proper for you to touch me like this. Men and women should keep their boundaries in public; you’d better watch out lest your wife sees it and it spells trouble for you."
It was better not to mention this at all, as doing so prompted John Brown to suddenly pick up Sunny Nguyen, saying, "Didn’t you all agree that even after I married Gina, you could still be with me? Why are you backing out now?"
Sunny Nguyen was startled. She said desperately, "James, you can’t do this, really. Gina is my good friend. Doing this would hurt her." Even as John Brown carried her towards the sofa, Sunny Nguyen pleaded, "James, I can’t betray Gina. Others may do it, but I can’t, truly."
John Brown placed Sunny Nguyen onto his lap, one hand around her waist, and the other lifting her chin, asking, "Are you sure?"
"I... am sure!" Sunny Nguyen replied loudly, but her attitude was not very firm.
John Brown smiled and said, "If you’re sure, why is your body trembling, your face reddening, and your breaths heated?"
"I... I’m trembling because I’m afraid of what you’ll do to me. My face is red because it’s warm in here, and my breaths are warm... because I’m hot."
John Brown didn’t speak, teasingly saying, "Is that really so?"
"Rea... really." Sunny Nguyen tried to avoid John Brown’s gaze, but he wouldn’t let her have her way, steadily looking into her eyes, his face slowly inching closer.
Sunny Nguyen’s breath became more rapid, her chest heaving intensely. Weakly she said, "James, I... I... Gina will be angry." But as soon as John Brown’s lips met hers, her reason was like a breached flood, completely beyond control.
