Oh. Oh, there was more life in his eyes now, but it only made his gaze hot, burning, because that life in his eyes was rage. Rage, burning bright and hot.

Did he hate being called my husband that much? Did it repulse him to that extent?

You would think seeing that look in his eyes would make me back down, dial down a tune or two, but Bedonna wouldn’t do something so boring.

Kade Varkas was a challenge, a ticking bomb that could go off without warning. It seems we both have something inmon.

“You will be my husband soon,” I said, slipping my feet back into my shoe without taking my eyes off him. “So why don’t we get used to it?”

He said nothing, just stared back at me, but his anger slowly melted away until his face was back to being a nk te, and his eyes once again soulless. That wasn’t fun.

“You’re right,” he said, rolling his shoulders to relieve the tension there. “We’re going to be stuck together soon.”

I chuckled softly, getting to my feet. “I would prefer it if you don’t phrase it like that. You mind if we go walk?”

He stood up, not looking at anybody as he walked around the table and to me, but I didn’t miss the look he gave his brother, or the worried look his brother shot back.

They should both rx. I wasn’t going to bite or anything. I honestly want to know him… and maybe taunt him a bit. Don’t me me, it was too fun not to.

He didn’t take my hand, instead, he just brushed past me. I didn’t mind his bad manners and followed anyway, smiling to myself as if I hadn’t felt his brother’s burning gaze.

The eldest Varkas was protective of his younger brother. That was cute, and I felt a bit jealous.

We moved deeper into the gardens, the evening air crisp, brushing against my bare shoulders. I walked close enough to him to smell his manly scent, but I didn’t try to catch up with him.

“You walk too fast, husband–to–be,” I teased, lifting the hem of my dress so it doesn’t snag. “Are you afraid of being alone with me?”

He didn’t stop walking. “I’m afraid of what nonsense you might do this time.”

“I didn’t take you to be one who gets afraid so easily.”

“You should. I’m shaking with fear right now.”

I chuckled, a slight bounce to my steps. b“/bIs that sarcasm I hear? I didn’t know you had it in you.”

He said nothing, just kept walking. ol start="55"livouchers /li/ol

“You know it’s rude to walk ahead of your femalepany. At least pretend to have manners, Kade”

He stopped walking abruptly, and I nearly collided with his back. I’m sure my nose would break if my face collided with that thing. He turned slowly, and his expression was just as nk.

“Then after you,” he said, his eyes on mine.

Mio Dio, his voice. I loved how raspy it was, and yet it was soft. I’m sure if he were to yell in anger, his voice would remain the same. I could almost melt right now. But I only tilted my head, smiling at him. “Now that’s some manners. I want to know you, Kade.”

“Why?” he asked with an eyebrow raised.

I raised an eyebrow back. “Why?‘ Is it wrong to want to know the man I’ll be getting married to soon?”

His jaw tightened at being reminded about the marriage, but I’m sure it hadn’t been far from his mind. “No,” he said through his teeth. “It’s not.”

I nodded. “Good. Then tell me, what is it? That look in your eyes and the edge in your voice. Is it disgust? Hatred? Or are you fighting the same thing I am?”

That got him, and there was an almost invisible twitch at the corner of his mouth, not quite a smile, not quite

    a snarl.

    “You assume too much.”

I stepped closer, close enough that the warmth of him bled into me. For someone so cold, he had a lot of warmth. My voice dropped, silken, taunting. “Or maybe you feel too much.”

His jaw clenched. He didn’t move away, his fists clenching and unclenching at his sides, and for a moment, I thought he might snap, and grab me by the waist, or by the neck. Or maybe both. But I didn’t mind either way, as long as he grabbed me.

But he did none of those things. “Unfortunately, Bedonna, that’s not the case.”

    Unfortunately…

That meant he wanted to feel. And he said my name again. God, that felt good. Just hearing him call my name felt so good.

I took another step towards him until our bodies were almost touching, and since I was wearing heels, I could almost look him eye to eye.

“Then maybe you need someone to make you feel,” I purred, my eyes searching his.

“I don’t,” he answered without hesitation.

    “You do.”

“And what makes you so confident?”

    :

“I think we have more things inmon than you know, Kade.”

    “I doubt that.”

“You shouldn’t.” A pause, and we just stared into each other’s eyes. “I can make you feel.”

He scoffed, the sound harsh. “Your confidence is staggering, Miss Iannelli.”

My lips curled slightly. “I get that a lot.” I closed the little space between us, pressing my chest to his. “Come on, Kade, let me make you feel.”

He was silent for a while. “Why? What is it to you?”

I just shrugged. “I see you as a challenge. I love challenges.”

His eyes grew hard, and whatever little progress I made was gone in a blink. “Careful, Miss Iannelli. y with fire long enough, and you’ll burn. I’m not some toy to ease your boredom.”

Miss Iannelli? Seriously? This was the second time in a row now.

I didn’t back down though. “Maybe I want to be burned. Burn me, Kade.”

He shook his head. “That is what they all say until they feel the harsh lick of the me against their skin.”

“Oh, trust me. I’m used to the me. This wouldn’t be the first time I would be getting burned. Soe on, Kade. Why not use me? I seriously won’t mind.”

His eyes remained fixed on mine, then they dropped to my lips.
