I went to work like I always did but I was barely functioning. My head was so out of that that I made lots of mistakes and fucked up countless times. The people under me became confused because usually, I was Mr. Perfect, always getting the work done, never making a single mistake.

But that was a front I put on to get by. Truth be told, I made countless mistakes every day. I get documents wrong and sign the wrong things, but I always get it fixed before anybody would notice.

But today, I couldn’t maintain that front. My head was a mess.

Who was he? How much did she love him for her to be dreaming about her? How much did the rtionship scar her? What the fuck did Medea do to her? What on God’s green earth was this feeling in my chest? Jealousy? Possessiveness? That was bullshit. I didn’t feel anything for her to be jealous or possessive.

This was all bullshit and overwhelming. I wanted it all to be over and I needed to catch a breather.

I left my office around lunchtime, going up to the ceiling, but I didn’t take the elevator but instead took the stairs. There might be people in the elevator, but I knew I wouldn’te across anybody on the stairs and I didn’t until I got to the roof.

But I was disappointed when I reached there and saw someone was already there. I was about to ignore them and just bring my cigarette out but they turned around and I couldn’t ignore them even though I wanted them.

“Oh!” she eximed, a wide smile on her face, a cigarette in between her lips. Why did she look so excited to see me? “Hello.”

“Hello, Mrs. Iannelli,” I said politely, even though I was gritting my teeth inwardly. She was thest person I wanted to see right now.

“Please, just call me Medea.”

I nodded, but kept my mouth closed.

“Came here for a cigaretteb?/b” she asked and I nodded, standing still.

She walked to me slowly, deliberately, swaying her hips and keeping her eyes fixed on mine. “Here.” She raised her cigarette pack, offering me one.

I didn’t smoke that kind of cigarette, but I epted it with a strained smile. She was my mother–inw, and I couldn’t walk away even though I wanted to so badly.

I ced the cigarette on my lips, about to take out my lighter but she stopped me when she leaned forward, nting her hand on my chest and bringing her face close to mine. Every single muscle in my body froze up, my eyes slightly wide as she got so near that I could feel her hot breath. She held her cigarette with her lips and lit mine, her face so dangerously close to mine.

The cigarette was lit, but she still didn’t step away. She just stayed close to me, her face still close, the feeling of disgust turning wild in my stomach.

I stepped away first, creating a great distance between us, inhaling and blowing out the smoke.

“Why’re you so tense, Kade?” she asked, her voice low, but at least she still kept her space.

“You shouldn’t be so close to me,” I answered, looking at all the tall buildings, feeling the chill air on my face. “People might get the wrong idea.”

“But it’s just the two of us here.”

That feeling in my stomach intensified.

I said nothing, just focused on my cigarette. The sooner I was done, the sooner I was out of here.

“You’re a hard man to catch, Kade Varkas,” she said, her voice sounding closer.

“Indeed.”

She worked on the fifth floor while I was on the sixth. The higher the floor, the higher your work in thepany was. Bedonna was on the ninth floor, while her father was on the tenth floor. Soon, the tenth floor would be hers.

And that was why we were married.

I really didn’t want to be reminded of that, because it would bring back that bitterness back. Bitterness on top of all these emotions I was already feeling would be torture.

“Why don’t youe home for dinner?” Medea asked, and I turned to see her standing behind me.

“If Bedonna agrees then we’lle.”

Her expression faltered, just for a moment, but I saw the real expression behind her mask; bitterness and jealousy.

“I’m inviting just youb,/b” she said, still maintaining the pleasant expression.

I raised an eyebrow. “Why would Ie for dinner without my wife?”

“We want to get to know our son–inw. Anything so wrong about that?”

I ced the cigarette on my lips, inhaling and blowing out slowly before I answered, “No. Of course not. But

you can get to know me with my wife around as well. Anything wrong about that?”

She just stared at me, the crack in her mask widening. “No, there’s nothing.”

“Good. So I’ll be at dinner with my wife, then.”

She smiled, falseness written all over it. “Sure.”

She turned and left, her back tensed. I kept the cigarette in my mouth, watching her go.

What the fuck was that about?

I took the cigarette out, staring at it before I tossed it away, putting it out with the heel of my shoe, and left the rooftop.

And there went my cigarette break. Ruined, just like my day. Or my damn life.

I went home early that day because my mistakes were getting too much that they couldn’t be ignored anymore. So I went home, my body heavy, aching to soak in a warm bath.

But when I saw Bedonna in the living room, the n changed.

Herptop was in front of her, a cup of tea beside her, and her hair was loose. I noticed she never tied her hair up even though it was really long and must be a bother.

She raised her head from herptop when she noticed me, her eyes widening a bit. Apart from that, she lookedposed, in control. That vulnerable and scared woman fromst night and this morning is nowhere to be found.

“Wow,” she said. “You’re home early.”

I sighed as I dropped down on the couch, loosening my tie. “Today was a mess.”

“Same for me.”

I looked at her and our eyes met. I knew without being told that I was the reason her day was a mess. It wasforting to know I wasn’t the only one lost in their head all day.

“Medea has invited us to dinner,” I said and her expression suddenly transformed to the point that I didn’t recognize her.
