When Medea first came into our house, I didn’t like her, but I didn’t hate her either. I just felt nothing for her. In my head, she was just my father’s toy, something that he brought to ease his grief.

We were humans, we had to find a way to release our grief so it wouldn’t suffocate us to death. My father found his, but he only added to mine.

Medea was the extra weight added to my grief.

She was all smiles at first, but when she saw all I had, the jealousy started growing and she showed her sharp teeth and ws.

That was when she started pulling my father away, and my father, with his head up in the clouds didn’t notice. until it was toote. He didn’t notice until there was a vast space separating us, a space that till this day hasn’t been filled.

When he realized and tried to fix our rtionship, I had already built a wall around myself, a wall to protect me from the outside world, a wall nobody could break. Or that was what I thought.

“You see I met someone,” I continued, my voice growing smaller. The elevator had opened at some point on the ninth floor, and there were even people waiting to get in, but once they saw the two of us inside and the position we were in, they pressed their lips together with nervous smiles and stayed out until the elevator closed again.

“His world was different from mine. So damn different, we didn’t have a single thing inmon, and yet we clicked together so well. Not at first, at least. Our first meeting was chaotic, our second meeting even worse. We tried to avoid each other but that was when we ran into each other even more. We continued their way until eventually, he fell in love with me, and slowly, very slowly, he took my heart and held it captive.”

Kade was tense, so tense that it felt like a little breeze would shatter him like Lego blocks. But now that the bandage has been peeled open, the words won’t stoping out.

All the alcohol, partying, sex–and at one darkest point; drugs–was to get over my first love.

“Medea noticed this of course,” I went on, my arms still around Kade, his warmth still bleeding into my body. “She noticed that I was smiling, that the circles around my eyes had cleared, and my happiness filled her with bitter rage. She found out about him, and his being not part of our world–our society and status–gave her an upper hand. Italians were very old–fashioned, very set in their ways.

A sessor like me couldn’t be with someone who has nothing to his name. It would bring shame to the family, they said. It would taint our bloodline, they said. It was outrageous, they said. And the most painful part of it all was that my father agreed to it.”

I mmed the brakes again, inhaling deeply to clear the lump in my throat and the burning in my eyes.

God’s sake, it’s been years, Bedonna! Snap out of this bullshit.

Kade’s hands flexed on his sides, clenching and unclenching, his fingers stretching. Then slowly–bso /bdamn slow–he raised his hands and ced them gently on my back. He was still as stiff as a rock, but that gentle, awkward, touch was grounding enough. fn81d8 This update is avable on Find~Novel/fn81d8

We humans were such pathetic, needy creatures. It was pathetic how we needed the touch of others to ground ourselves. Really pathetic how we would take anything to just feel the tiniest spark offort.

And yet, it was so beautiful how we could receivefort from gentle, awkward touches.

“When they saw that I wouldn’t budge, it annoyed them to no end,” I continued, my eyes still closed. “Especially our darling Medea. I don’t know how she did it, but she managed to get my father’s consent to get rid of my lover. But what my father didn’t know was the method she was going to use and her definition of getting rid of.”

“She killed him,” Kade finally spoke, his voice slightly hoarse, an edge to it.

I nodded, a tear finally slipping out. “She killed him, and almost killed me too.”

That rainy night years ago. Me yelling at him to hold on as we ran away from our shooter, and him reassuring me that he was never letting go. The sound of a gunshot, his hand slipping away from mine, the hole in his stomach, his… lifeless eyes.

I wanted to join him, but that choice was taken away from him.

I still remember the night my father found out about the method she used. That was the first andst time he had hit her.

“Do you think we’re in the mafia?!” he screamed at her face after hitting her, his body shaking uncontrobly, his eyes wide and red. He had just had that ident, but the adrenaline popping through his veins must have been what was making him stand without his cane. “How could you do something like that, Medea? We’re not thugs! We’re a respectable family!”

And after all that, he still kept the witch on his side. That was when my father and I’s rtionship hit the

gutter.

The look in Medea’s eyes still haunted me to this day; she had looked wild, possessed, as if something had taken over her body, but I knew she was still herself. That was just her rotten side that she could no longer hide.

That one tear that slipped out was the only one, and no other one followed it, even though my chest was unbearably tight.

“She deserves to die,” Kade mumbled, his hands on my back clenched and trembling slightly.

It was my turn to stroke his back. “She does, and one day I’ll get my revenge. But I wouldn’t kill her, that would be a mercy. I will make her suffer.”

The elevator door opened at that moment and Kade pulled away like I burned him, his head hung low as he rushed out. But before he left, I heard him mutter, “You should kill her.”
