The Witcher: Make the Witcher Great Again
Chapter 256: Food That Doesn't Glow Can't Be Good
Since Yennefer had arrived tonight, Lynn prepared to show off his culinary skills. It was a welcome feast for her.
Hearing that Lynn was going to showcase his talents, Regis, Dettlaff, and Syanna quickly went out to buy ingredients. Having tasted Lynn's "glowing dishes" before, they had all been captivated by his craftsmanship.
Lynn's cooking, brought from his home world, was so exquisite that even ordinary home-cooked meals could be transformed into gourmet dishes.
However, despite his excellent cooking, Lynn didn't cook daily. He only unleashed his skills when the mood struck him. This was a hardship for everyone else.
After tasting Lynn's cooking, eating anyone else's, while not entirely like chewing wax, often left them longing for the next time Lynn would personally cook. Seeing another opportunity to feast, everyone was naturally delighted and excited.
Soon, Regis and the others returned with the ingredients. Since there were many mouths to feed, they naturally brought back a substantial amount of food. Preparing for so many people was no easy task. Fortunately, Lynn was a witcher, far stronger than ordinary people, and washing vegetables could be delegated to others.
Time quickly moved to evening. The villa's great hall was packed. A lavish spread of delicious food covered the table. Yennefer, seeing Lynn's cooking for the first time, even though she wasn't a glutton, showed a hint of surprise in her expression upon smelling the rich aromas.
"Alright, everyone, dig in! It won't taste as good when it gets cold."
With Lynn's word, those who couldn't wait any longer began to pick up their knives and forks. For a time, no one spoke in the hall, only the clinking of cutlery and the sounds of chewing.
But Lynn didn't move. He frowned slightly, sensing a chaotic magical force emanating from outside the house. "Such powerful chaotic magic," his witcher medallion vibrated violently. "No attempt to conceal it. There shouldn't be any ill intent."
He pushed his chair back and stood up. "You all go ahead and eat. I'm going to check it out."
"I'm coming with you." His good brother Geralt was the first to stand up. The others also responded.
They all left the hall and went outside the villa. There, they saw a sorceress, whose beauty was no less than Yennefer's, but whose fashion sense seemed old-fashioned and rigid, standing in the courtyard.
In this dreadful old society, the status of women was far from comparable to Lynn's home world. Even noblewomen and princesses were constrained by many rules
. Daughters of royal and noble families might enjoy luxuries beyond the dreams of common folk, but most could not control their own lives and destinies. Because in this era, there was only one type of alliance: political marriage.
A non-aggression pact without a marriage alliance was useless, barely good enough to wipe one's backside with. Therefore, daughters of royal and noble families were viewed as political tools for family continuation, securing territories, and forging alliances from birth.
However, in this old society where women held no status, sorceresses, who studied magic, were a special group. To assert their independence, they often made bold statements with their appearance.
For example, common girls would braid their hair; married women would cover their hair with bonnets or scarves; high-born women, including queens and empresses, would style their hair in various elaborate ways.
Female warriors would cut their hair short; only druidesses, sorceresses, and prostitutes kept their hair natural, to emphasize their independence and freedom. And in terms of dress, sorceresses were even more daring.
But the beautiful sorceress standing in the courtyard now wore a plain blue gown in the style of an ordinary noblewoman. If Lynn's witcher medallion wasn't constantly vibrating, and if he didn't recognize this lady, others might simply mistake her for a common noblewoman.
"Madam Tissaia, welcome."
"You know me?" Tissaia raised an eyebrow. "Shouldn't this be our first meeting?"
Lynn smiled but didn't answer.
"This is not the place to talk. Please come inside."
Tissaia nodded. Then she noticed Yennefer in the crowd, which surprised her. She hadn't expected her student to be here. She went over and chatted with Yennefer for a few moments, only to learn that Yennefer had come at Lynn's invitation.
Returning to the hall, everyone sat down again. Tissaia took a seat beside Yennefer. Lynn asked Kassia to fetch an extra set of cutlery for Tissaia.
Tissaia's sudden visit meant she had something to discuss, but since she arrived right at dinner time, she joined the meal. Initially, she had only planned to eat a little, but to her surprise, it was incredibly delicious.
She had lived for hundreds of years and had been invited as a guest to the castles of kings and great nobles, yet she had never tasted such exquisite food.
After dinner, Lynn, knowing Tissaia had something important to discuss, invited her to the second floor.
"Please, make yourself at home, Madam Tissaia," Lynn gestured towards the sofa in the room. "Would you like something to drink? Tea? Coffee? Or some Toussaint rose wine?"
Tissaia sat down on the sofa, thought for a moment, and said, "A glass of rose wine, please."
Lynn retrieved a bottle of rose wine from his magically enchanted leather pouch, which he had brought from his own vineyard. He then placed two wine glasses, poured the rose wine into each. He handed one glass to Tissaia.
"Thank you." Tissaia took the glass, her gaze surveying the surroundings. "It's rare for a witcher to afford such a large house, like you. You're so young, yet already wealthier than most witchers."
Lynn politely thanked her. Tissaia took a sip of rose wine and slowly said, "You misunderstand. I wasn't complimenting you; merely stating a fact. Tell me, Lynn, what is your opinion of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers?"
"Very good, very powerful." Lynn replied without hesitation, without even thinking.
Tissaia shook her head. "That's not what you truly feel."
Tissaia was the former Rector of Aretuza Academy. Yennefer, Triss, Margarita, Keira—all these rising stars were her students. She was also one of the five members of the Council of Gifted and Talented, the central body of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers. She had seen it all. Naturally, she could tell at a glance that Lynn wasn't speaking the truth.
Caught out, Lynn didn't feel embarrassed. As long as he wasn't embarrassed, it was everyone else who would be. "Madam Tissaia, I'm afraid if I speak my true feelings, you might not want to hear them."
"I might not want to hear them, but I know that listening to some truth, when appropriate, is always beneficial."
"Madam Tissaia, did you specifically travel from Gorthur Gwillt to Novigrad just to hear my opinion on the Brotherhood of Sorcerers?" Lynn asked, feeling curious.
"Of course not, but I genuinely wanted to know your true thoughts, Lynn."
