"Go on, brother. Smash your head against the rock and kill yourself," the younger brother said with a cold stare and indifferent tone.
The older one, meanwhile, stared at the rock with trembling eyes, feeling like garbage, just as his brother made sure to throw in his face. He could hardly believe he had gotten the fiancée—whom he was going to marry—pregnant, and now he would have to kill him so she wouldn't lose the baby.
"Go, kill yourself, brother. Let the pain go away. No one likes you. You're going to die soon anyway, so go do it without being a coward," the younger one kept speaking, while the older brother was still uncertain, insecure.
He was full of anger, frustration, and fear consumed him, all intensified by alcohol. He couldn't behave as he should. He was living through the greatest betrayal of his life. It was destroying him inside that night as he cried.
The younger brother couldn't take it anymore. He simply shoved the older brother hard against the rock, making him fall, hit his head, and pass out right there.
The younger brother looked at it all with indifference as the forehead began to bleed. He went to his neck to touch it and check if he was dead. He let a few tears fall from his eyes, but he would not regret it. He waited a bit longer before starting to scream for the guards, claiming his brother had suffered an accident.
The younger one's gaze returned to the present, where he was Lord Abutec, as he stared at the wine bottle and drank in front of the witcher and the "chubby boy."
"And that's how it was... That night when I opened his crypt, I drank too much and started to feel guilty, so I went to him to try to ask for forgiveness. That's when it all began," he murmured, remembering he had opened his brother's grave and, at that moment, his spirit came out.
"I won't say whether you were right or not, but you were lucky not to have left that thing in there longer," Geralt said after hearing the story, while Lucas Abutec looked at him. Geralt continued.
"The spirit was feeding all that time inside the tomb. It's not that you created this situation. He was already there, getting stronger, and in a few years he would become a creature that would kill your entire family. So, you should be thankful he only appears at night, moaning around the house."
"And what can I do?" he asked.
"We'll have to deal with your dead brother. That's why we need to go to the tomb — including you. After all, he's the one you want and we need to lure him," Geralt said.
"You're going to put me in danger, witcher?" the lord said with dissatisfaction.
"If you really want to get rid of your brother's ghost, we'd better give him what he truly wants: you. Since you're the one who destroyed his life.
Or we can simply leave, and you try to get rid of him on your own. But don't take more than a few years, because soon he'll be strong enough to kill all of you, feeding off his own resentment," the witcher warned in a serious tone.
The man sighed and nodded in the end, despite his displeasure.
"Alright... Let's finish this," he said.
"I'll prepare everything I need to deal with the ghost," Geralt said in the end, as he left the room.
He quickly went to the kitchen to get a few things, with the servants, like salt, and then went to the bag on his horse in the stable, where he picked up a few more items he would need.
Then, he prepared the ground in the tomb, with Ciri watching.
Madara also showed up, checking the situation.
"What do you think about this? He won't let us live, will he? We know too much," Ciri asked, alert for any attack from the noble, especially expecting it after the job was done.
"I've dealt with nobles with similar stories and I'm still alive. Though I was sure some tried to kill me, they just didn't reach me in time," Geralt commented.
"We'll handle this as usual. If he sends men to hunt us... well, we know how to deal with them," Madara said in the end.
Everything was ready, while Geralt was already informing the lord. His wife was coming too, furious.
"How dare you put the lord of these lands in danger?" she began to exclaim with anger.
"It's all right. It's what I have to do," the noble said in the end, turning his gaze to the witcher. "Now let's finish this," he said, while Geralt nodded, signaling for them to follow.
Lord Abutec seemed uneasy as he entered the tomb, staring at his brother's grave, disturbed, full of memories.
"That day... I heard his voice, seeking vengeance... and I ran from the place... I was a little drunk, but still, it was terrifying," the noble commented.
"I want to finish making a few circles." Geralt ignored him and continued doing what he needed there.
"What do I have to do?" the noble asked.
"You have to stay inside the circle. And be careful not to touch or destroy any part of it. It will protect you from your brother, while we deal with him. Remember: don't leave the circle. And I also need you to call him when we're ready," Geralt instructed, while handling things.
When he finally finished, he turned back to the noble, just giving a nod to signal that they should begin.
The noble nodded, took a deep breath, and started. "Brother, I'm here... Brother, I came to see you... I came to ask your forgiveness," he said.
Everything seemed silent, until suddenly, from the tomb itself, a gust of air began to blow against them, with a growl. Slowly, a necrotic hand began to emerge. It came out, revealing a worn face, completely deformed, glowing with an ethereal light, fully rising from the tomb and starting to float in the air.
Ciri and Geralt were alert, but the noble was terrified by it. This was the creature that haunted his mansion, but that no one could see. Now, it had appeared.
"Brother..." it said, pointing a hand at him as if trying to grab him. "You destroyed my life!"
Immediately, it lunged at him. The noble panicked, with it unable to reach him, striking against a barrier within the circle. Lord Abutec still fell backward, frightened, and almost touched outside the protective circle.
Geralt quickly drew his silver sword and moved in, while Ciri readied her weapon in place, not advancing. Though she didn't have much mobility in that outfit, she could still defend herself.
Geralt pulled out an oil and applied it to the blade.
Quickly, he rushed toward the deformed specter, striking it. The creature tried to hit the barrier again, but was struck by Geralt and screamed in pain as it tried to move away from his sword.
It looked at the witcher with rage and began attacking him violently.
Geralt defended himself while Ciri remained alert. The witcher quickly began casting signs against the spectral being, managing to cut it, but the creature was quite agile, disappearing and reappearing constantly, while Geralt dodged its attacks.
The noble seemed increasingly terrified, retreating across the floor. The creature, now and then, tried to attack him directly. He kept crawling backward until his hand touched the salt and the symbols of the circle, deactivating the invisible shield. The creature noticed.
"Damn!" Geralt muttered.
The creature fled the fight with Geralt and charged toward the brother at that moment.
Geralt was too far to defend him, but Ciri reacted in time. A glow surrounded her body as she teleported, striking her steel sword against the creature before it could kill the noble.
She forced the specter back and, when she found an opening, after putting all her body weight into the sword, she drove it straight into the creature, plunging the blade into the ghost.
And suddenly, in the next moment, the sword began to glow. The specter let out a surprised scream before starting to be sucked into the shining blade, until it vanished completely.
Ciri stood confused, with Geralt rushing over with a strange look, and the noble still breathing heavily and in shock.
"What was that?" Ciri murmured.
"I don't know, but it's not here anymore," Geralt replied, as the ghost had simply disappeared.
He looked up and saw Madara on the ceiling the entire time, who shook his head, indicating the spirit was no longer anywhere.
"Well... I guess we dealt with the creature," Geralt muttered with a bit of uncertainty.
"He's gone..." the noble murmured from the floor, still horrified by what he had just seen.
"Yes. He's no longer a problem for you now," Geralt said at last, since there was nothing more they could do there.
In the end, they returned to the estate, while the noble was being tended to — without physical injuries, but still examined by the healers as a precaution.
Geralt wanted to confirm whether the ghost would appear again that night. And indeed, it didn't. No strange sounds were heard during the night.
Ciri was still staring dazedly at her sword, as she cleaned and sharpened it slowly.
"What do you think?" she asked Madara in the room.
"It's strange... you have many powers we don't know yet... Maybe you simply pulled him into another world or lost him in space-time. He could've gone anywhere... or even gotten trapped in a dimension," Madara said.
"Wait... I can do that?" Ciri murmured, stunned and doubtful.
"Seems like it. Well, anyway, the creature is nowhere to be found. Its energy just vanished," Madara said in the end.
The next day, Geralt and Ciri went to meet with Lord Abutec, who was still deep in thought.
"I just wanted to thank you for everything you did... and I'd like you to stay at least two more days in the mansion, just to be sure the creature won't show up again," he asked.
And so they did.
When the last day came, with no trace of the ghost, he prepared their reward — including the town's bounty, which brought a lot of money directly to Geralt, and a very generous personal reward as well.
"I don't even need to say I want you to tell no one about this. Otherwise, I'll know exactly who it was... and you will be hunted by me, I swear," he said.
"All right," Geralt replied, as the noble nodded.
He looked at the chubby boy.
"And thank you... for saving me, whatever it was you did there," he said, still recalling the flash that made her appear in front of him, defending him from the ghost. Then, the boy there did something and it simply vanished.
Ciri just nodded.
They finally began to leave the estate, resuming their journey south.
