CHAPTER 83: CH 83: BEACON.

After a few hours of waiting their suits finally came in, too late for them to test it as the driver was already antsy to leave.

They were given to them in sleek black cases as they stepped into the car and proceeded back to the academy.

The car ride was supposed to be silent. Unfortunately, Aegon wouldn’t be Aegon if he didn’t have something to say.

"You work for the C.A.A?" He said flatly as she turned to Mira, who ignored him and lightly hit her head against the glass.

"Why can’t you let this go? I told you already it’s none of your business." She said without looking at him.

He persisted. "Except it can’t be the C.A.A because they’re actually concerned with the mercenary issue and you said your boss wasn’t."

"Yeah." She added. "You’ve figured it out. Now you can relax."

"Why’d you let me save you? That day in the cafeteria, did you pretend to be helpless or did you actually need him?" His voice turned serious.

Sighing, she faced him. "Are you being serious right now?"

"Yeah." They locked eyes. "I wanna know if I was being played from the start and why?"

A beat of silence slipped between them as neither said anything but just exchanged stares.

"..."

"No." Mira said finally. "I wasn’t pretending to be helpless. I actually froze for a minute... but everything else after that? Yeah. I was totally playing you."

"Ohh—" His shoulders slumped slightly.

"What about you?"

"What do you mean?"

She raised a brow. "Let me give you a rundown of everything that’s happened with you since you’ve been here...

You fought with the top two ranked awakened, you broke up with the MC, you moved from the bottom of the barrel to the top five—you’re on a roll..."

"..."

She stopped as she saw his face turn sour. "What’s going on Aegon?"

He curled a finger at her. "You just called Micheal the MC and ran past it like it was nothing." His eyes widened. "You know Micheal’s the MC? You were transmigrat—"

"We’re here."

Before he could finish the driver rolled down the blink and announced their arrival.

"..."

"...!"

The two remained stiff for a minute, just staring at one another unsure of what to say or do.

Aegon opened his mouth. She noticed this, grabbed her case and stormed off.

"Fuck no!" He cursed as he grabbed his and chased after her. "Mira! If that’s even your real name."

"Aegon, stop." Mira said as she scurried away. " It’s better for both of us that way I promise."

But he wasn’t letting her escape. Luckily the night was lonely and quiet so there was no one around for the conversation.

He tossed his case to the side. Stretched his hands and blasted the path beside her, enough for her to stop and turn back.

"You’re a transmigrator? When did you get here? How did you get here?" He ranted on and on.

She removed the scrunchy used to hold her hair back, scratched her scalp as she spoke to him. "Aegon, I need you to pretend as if this conversation never happened."

"Why?!" He screamed. "Who cares? Let me in for once."

"Why?" She snorted. "Because you’ve been here a couple month and the entire plot is down the fucking toilet. I’ve been here for ten years and you screwed everything up in months.

How is that even possible?"

He took a step forward. "I didn’t screw things up that bad." He took another.

She raised for hands and the cold hazed out. "Don’t come close to me Aegon I fucking mean it."

She gestured back. "I’m gonna go back to my dorm and you’ll go back to yours... and when we meet tomorrow we’ll pretend this conversation never happened."

"Let’s just take a breather." He said, inching closer towards her. "Why don’t you just tell me your real name?"

Mira notices his steps, extends her hands and freezes his legs in place.

He tried to raise his legs out but failed. He lifted his eyes to hers. "I can literally just melt this." His hands already hot.

"If you do it doesn’t change anything. Aegon you destroyed the place I tried to keep the same for years.

I pretended to be the shy powerful awakened girl for years, I played it so well I was shocked when something that wasn’t in the novel happened.

And of course it was you!" She screamed.

"The fight in the cafeteria." Aegon added. "You weren’t pretending, you were shocked something outside the plot was happening."

She gave him a thumbs up. Ruffling her hair some more. "Aegon I’m trying to stay away from you."

"Why?" He cut her off, his legs still frozen in place. "Why are you avoiding me?"

"Because they are two types of MCs in every novel. There’s the cocky, god chosen MC who has everything dropped at their feet, they have the entire world love them and they always get the girl—"

"What’s the point of this?" Aegon asked. "Why are you telling the this?"

Mira kept her eyes on him. "Then there’s the beacon MC. The one who isn’t chosen for shit.

The one who’s at the bottom of the barrel and destined for mediocrity yet crawls until he’s at the centre of everything, you wanna know why they call them beacons?

...They are beacons for any and every single bad thing that could ever happen in a world.

You’re the later."

She grabbed her case and stormed off once more.

Aegon stood there, watching her disappear into the night. "I’m a beacon." He repeated back to himself severally but freeing his legs and heading to bed.

---

The next morning came quickly but Aegon’s mind was still in yesterday events—particularly last night.

He’s a beacon of calamity. Anything that could go wrong will go wrong as long as he’s involved. He’s cursed.

Pushing it to back of his mind as he got dressed in his suit in the morning—it was everything Claudette said and more.

Even with all the added material it was free, malleable and breathable. He stretched on and on in his dorm in the hope of hearing a slight cream but heard nothing.

"Nice suit." Zara tilted her head. "What does the ’GK’ on the chest stand for?"

He pointed at her. "Shouldn’t you be in class?"

Indeed she should, it was only the two of them in the room as Quinn and Eli had already left for classes. "Nahh. They cancelled my class." She lied smoothly.

Aegon ignored her, already knowing she was lying to him. He turned back to his reflection in the mirror.

"Kheum." She coughed to get him attention. "What does the ’GK’ stand for?"

"God Killer."
