This World Can't Handle A Cultivating Bad-boy.
Chapter 84: Ch 84: Try.
CHAPTER 84: CH 84: TRY.
Aegon and Mira got dressed and headed off to Nightwalker’s awakened agency.
In Veltharion there were two awakened sectors—the public and the private sector. V.A.L.O.R encompasses the entirety of the public sector.
From awakened licencing which was the legal document giving official permission to use affinities out in the public. Agents, who were high officials in V.A.L.O.R were awakened—and sometimes non awakened—who’d crawled up the ranks to high positions.
The best example would be Alex.
Then the private sector was a little more broad; construction, delivery, security, anything and everything that could help in society.
Who needs to hire an entire construction company to build a house, when an awakened group of five could do it in a day.
But it also raised a valid question. In a world where half the population could move mountains and flight what was the need of unawakened?
Awakened were the bedrock of the new world. But none of these divisions paid quite as well as private awakened agencies.
Such as Nightwalker’s legendary agency—Sunborn. A tower multi complex office that towered for floors.
And Aegon and Mira stood in silence in front of the building waiting for the Paragon to grace them with his appearance.
"What time is it?" Aegon broke the silence, avoiding the fact that they both knew they were transmigrators. "Why the hell is he?"
"The hell should I know?" She folded her arms and tried to pretend she didn’t see him stealing glances at her.
"Could we just double back to last night please?"
"No."
She said dryly.
"Come on." He gestured between them. "We’re literally in a novel right now. Isn’t that crazy?"
"I don’t know what you’re talking about..." She lied. "But if I did, I would tell you I’ve been in this novel for ten years, so the awe wore off a while ago."
"Ten years huh? What’d you do in tha—"
"Shhh!" She shushed him. "I thought I made it perfectly clear I do—"
"Sorry." They hadn’t noticed when someone came from the building and approached them. "I’m so sorry to interrupt but are you Aegon and Mira by chance?"
"Who’s asking?"
Mira answered.
"Well..." She gave them a light smile. "I’m Nightwalker’s assistant —so I know he’s supposed to show a couple of awakened the ropes today...
And there’s the fact that you’re standing out the building in awakened suits in the sun."
Her words shrunk Mira down but she wouldn’t show it. "So where is he?"
The lady clicked her tongue. "He’s running a tad late but I promise he’ll be here in a few minutes...
And in the meantime you could come up so you don’t dry up in the sun."
They nodded as they followed her into the building, through the glass doors and straight to the elevators.
"..."
"So what’s your name?"
Aegon asked as the elevator hummed its way up.
"It’s Ivy. Ivy Sinclair."
"So... How long have you been working for the Paragon Ivy?"
"Too long." She said smiling but the way her nails dug into her palms said it all.
Luckily, the elevator slid open just in time. The floor was bustling with liveliness as they walked in.
They moved closely behind Ivy as she navigated the sea of cubicles and led them to one.
"Liam?" She knocked on the side of his cubicle.
He turned back, barely. Brown curly hair, a stubble beard and headphones over his ears. "Ivy?" He slid them down. "What’s going on?"
Ivy then gestured towards the duo at the side. "This is Aegon and Mira, they’re here for the boss. Could they just stay with you till he shows up?"
"Come on Iv." He sighed. "Kinda have work to do here."
"You see they could learn some things." She faced them. "You see Liam here is a dispatcher—his job is to receive hero requests from civilians and even the police and dispatch the available heroes to that location."
Feeling the uncomfortable stares from the two, he waves at them. "Hey guys."
"..."
They didn’t reply. Just stared at him until he agreed to let them stay with him. They sat in the seats next to him as they waited for Nightwalker.
They waited for about them minutes before—
~BOOM!~
The entire building quaked slightly. Liam just held onto his headphones and pushed his coffee down to avoid spills, like this was an everyday occurrence.
Soon after Nightwalker walked through the halls and straight into his office.
Ivy walked back to them. "Come on." She gestured and they followed her into Nightwalker’s office.
"Sir?" Ivy said politely. "Did you forget something?"
"Ivy." He rolled up his cape and sat down. "I don’t think so. Why you asking?"
"Sir. You kinda promised you’d show two awakened from Aetherion Academy the ropes today."
He sighed. Finally glancing at Aegon and Mira, but still spoke like they weren’t in the room. "Can’t this be pushed back?"
"I can try." Ivy started. "But it’s a favour to a high up in V.A.L.O.R."
"Fuck it, fine." Nightwalker pushed off his chair, cape swaying behind him. "You two try to keep up." He side steps them on his way to the elevator.
"Take this." Ivy then handed Aegon a scanner.
They say nothing but move behind him as the elevator doors close and they head downstairs.
"So which one of you was the kid who beat up my son?" Nightwalker said monotonously.
Aegon’s heart skipped a beat as his eyes peeled open. Mira shifted slightly away from him.
Although Nightwalker never faced them, he already knew. "Judging from your heartbeat I guess that’s you." He folded his hands behind his back. "It’s nice to meet you. Aegon."
Aegon swallowed hard, his throat bobbing but luckily the doors opened just in time to free them from the box.
They moved swiftly through the city. Unfortunately they couldn’t help but feel like glorified cross guards as there wasn’t really anything happening in the city.
In the short time they’d already conformed with the untold routine, they’d walked until someone wanted a picture with Nightwalker and then they’d step away and wait.
Over and over again until—
[Anyone there?]
The scanner Ivy handed Aegon finally spoke as they all turned their attention to the device.
"We’re here Ivy. What’s going on?"
Nightwalker said.
[ There’s a bank robbery a few blocks away from your current location. The police say the suspects are using Aether weapons. ]
"We’re on it." Nightwalker said before ending the transmission. "Let’s go kids... And do me a favour and try not to get killed."
