CHAPTER 13: CHAPTER 13: LOOKING DOWN ON OTHERS, DESERVES A SLAP IN THE FACE
After going through so much despair, Iris Crawford had long changed her nature. She was no longer the naive girl she used to be. Now, when provoked like this, her mindset was already strong. She watched Roxanne Young get flustered without a care, didn’t say a word, and just played Minesweeper on her own.
Clicked the last cell and won.
Iris rubbed her fingers, glanced at the time. She was half a minute slower than usual, surely because Roxanne was talking to her and distracted her. Iris mumbled, "I need to prepare to meet the guests from the Jacobs Family soon, no time to chat with you."
Roxanne Young’s face changed dramatically. She hadn’t expected this newcomer to disregard her like this. But was she going to let her off that easily? She put on a senior’s demeanor and placed a pile of documents on Iris’s desk. "Enter these materials into the database for me. It needs to be handed over to another department before the end of the day. Consider it a bridging task."
This was clearly work for another department, what kind of bridging task was this?
Iris looked up at Roxanne Young and didn’t say anything.
This kind of bullying often happens in the workplace, where when a newcomer joins, some malicious seniors deliberately give them tasks beyond their original job scope, passing all trivial chores to the newbie.
Exploiting newcomers is already a common social issue, and Roxanne Young certainly wouldn’t miss the chance to push around a newbie.
"Additionally, the department head’s son needs to write a thesis, and everyone is quite busy, so they can’t spare time. You’re new here and just a secretary, so this task will fall to you. Once the thesis is written, email it to me. The deadline is tonight," Roxanne said, deliberately staring at Iris’s fair, rosy face.
This woman didn’t wear heavy makeup, but there’s something about her that’s alluring. Maybe she seduced Young Master Wyatt to get into the company and she’s certainly not letting her get away with just being a gold digger.
Iris was waiting to hear what other outrageous tasks Roxanne would present, but after saying this, Roxanne left looking triumphant as if she had won a battle, without even waiting for Iris to reply.
In this workplace, the tasks given by the senior are automatically assumed to be accepted by the junior, aren’t they?
Looking at the documents placed on her desk unceremoniously, Iris chuckled, stood up from her chair, and knocked on the door of the CEO’s office outside.
Opening the door, Lachlan Wyatt was reading a report and raised his eyebrows when he saw Iris enter, "What’s up?"
"Your former secretary is trying to intimidate me by making me compile data for another department and write a thesis for the department head’s son."
As Iris said this, she sneered lightly, "There are people like this in the company, huh."
Upon hearing this, Lachlan Wyatt’s expression was meaningful, "Don’t bother me with such trivial matters, okay?"
Iris had expected him to say that, given that Lachlan Wyatt was someone who hated trouble.
She didn’t expect him to genuinely stand up for her, after all, when Lachlan had taken her to Jordan Jacobs’s wedding, he had his own interests. Now, even though his people were bullying Iris, he wouldn’t stand up for justice. It’s troublesome and there’s no benefit to it.
Iris stood there motionless, her red high heels were sexy and sharp. She hmm’d, unclear if she understood Lachlan’s words, continuing, "In twenty minutes, someone from Jordan Jacobs’s side will come over."
"You go ahead and receive them for me."
Lachlan Wyatt especially liked to watch, naturally wanting to see how Iris would handle representatives sent by her ex-husband’s company. So, the man smiled and took a sip of his coffee, saying, "I heard the representative sent is one of Yvonne Jennings’s relatives."
Iris looked up and thought about it, counting up three generations of Yvonne Jennings’s relatives, none of them had any merit. It seems Yvonne Jennings had already deeply infiltrated Jordan Jacobs’s company, even managing to send in her bunch of useless relatives. This is true backdoor dealings.
Outside in the meeting room, Iris brewed two cups of tea and waited for this relative of Yvonne Jennings. He walked in with an arrogant swagger, afraid others wouldn’t recognize him as someone from the Jacobs Family. After all, to ordinary people, the Jacobs Family was a prestigious lineage they could never hope to encounter.
Upon seeing a leggy beauty seated in the meeting room, the newcomer ogled Iris several times with a lecherous gaze before handing over a business card, "Hello, I’m Howard Jennings, the representative manager sent by Jacobs Enterprises."
Iris took the business card and said politely, "Hello, Manager Jennings. Regarding the cooperation between our two companies, there are still some key points I’d like to discuss with you..."
"Discussing is all well and good..." Howard Jennings said in an oily manner, sounding very much like a petty man drunk with success, leaning on the fact that having Yvonne Jennings in Jordan Jacobs’s life, he was able to represent and discuss matters at such a major company, yet as soon as he opened his mouth, he exposed all his lack of competence, "Are all the men in your company incompetent? Why send a woman like you to discuss with me? Is this not valued enough?"
Iris maintained a polite smile borne from good family education, saying, "Let’s bring the conversation back to the topic."
"Mainly, look at you, wearing high heels, a short skirt, tut tut." Howard Jennings continued with the same disgusting gaze on Iris, "You don’t look like someone who’s here for business negotiations and guest receptions at all... Exactly what are you doing here? Or could it be... you’re the boss’s... what, exactly?"
Iris said, "I’m an assistant secretary."
"Secretary, oh..." Howard Jennings dragged out his words, "I get it now, after all, secretary... they have business when there’s work, otherwise, that thing. So why don’t you call someone who can actually talk over here? You likely don’t understand anyway, unprofessional people should just sit and... wear high heels, cross legs for the bosses to see."
After listening to his long piece, Iris maintained a beautiful smile, "Don’t you have a mother who gave birth to you?"
Howard Jennings was stunned, in his eyes, a woman like a secretary could only be obsequious, he never imagined Iris would say something like that with a smile. Instantly, the man’s self-esteem was humiliated. He had originally sat down but now shot up from his chair, and with only the two of them in the meeting room, he threw caution to the wind, "Woman, do you know who I am?"
Iris spread her hands, posture both sexy and elegant, "Who are you?"
Since joining Jordan Jacobs’s company, Howard Jennings was always pampered due to being Yvonne Jennings’s relative, skimming off the top without those female colleagues daring to say anything. Who’d have thought he brought this delinquency here and wouldn’t get the same treatment?
Howard Jennings pointed at her, "Do you know what my relation is to Jordan Jacobs’s wife? I’m her cousin!"
"Wife?" Iris laughed, "Wasn’t the large wedding disturbed with funeral wreaths on the day itself, it’s all so unlucky. Your cousin’s a real husband killer."
That’s really hitting where it hurts! Howard Jennings slammed the table, "You are absolutely shameless, I’m nonetheless a VIP of your company! Get your boss out here, I have no time to deal with women like you, dressed so inappropriately without respect of hierarchy, how did you even get this job, you know, right?"
Constantly disrespecting women yet still using the women in his family to squeeze into high society, a man like this surely disgusted many innocent girls elsewhere. Iris crossed her arms and questioned him back, "And do you know who I am?"
Howard Jennings’s action paused, "Who are you?"
Iris smiled slyly, put down her long legs and stood up, grabbing the tea she’d originally brewed on the table and splashed it right at Howard Jennings’s face, "I’m your dad."
