Transmigrated as the Evil Stepmother, I Bully the Whole Family, Yay!
Chapter 196
Nan Sheng shot him a glare before asking the doctor in detail about what symptoms would require immediate medical attention.
The doctor said there shouldn’t be any issues as long as the wound didn’t get infected, and that Lin Han just needed to focus on recovery afterward.
"Given his current condition, Deputy Regimental Commander Lin has a very good chance of continuing his work in the military district after recovery. Just don’t forget to come back for follow-up checks!"
The medical facilities in the county town were far inferior to those in the city, so the doctor also warned Lin Han not to push himself with training before fully recovering, as it could worsen his condition.
They had set off for the county town at noon, but the slow, bumpy ride meant they didn’t arrive until nearly four in the afternoon.
Nan Sheng had Little Hou drive them straight to the county hospital, where Lin Han was settled in. The hospital had already been notified by the military hospital, and a private room had been prepared in advance.
Lin Han was in decent condition—his wound showed no signs of swelling or redness after the trip—so Nan Sheng left the two children to keep him company while she headed to the government office.
It was almost closing time when she arrived. Cao Guoxiang was surprised to see her and even invited her to his office for tea, but Nan Sheng politely declined.
"There’ll be time for tea tomorrow. Today, I’m just here to pick up the keys. I plan to stay in town tonight."
Cao Guoxiang knew Nan Sheng had been on leave recently and that her husband had been injured on duty, so he didn’t press further.
"Of course, there’ll be plenty of chances for tea later. Director Nan, you go ahead and take care of your business!"
With that, Secretary Cao had an assistant escort Nan Sheng to her new residence, which was just a few minutes’ walk from the government office—even quicker by car.
It was a two-story house, previously owned by a former director with questionable political affiliations, and had since been reclaimed as collective property.
The place had been thoroughly cleaned. The first floor had a kitchen, bathroom, and a spacious living room, while the second floor had three bedrooms—just right for their family.
"Director Nan, everything inside has been furnished as per Secretary Cao’s instructions. If there’s anything you’re not satisfied with or anything missing, just let me know, and I’ll bring it over tomorrow."
Nan Sheng found nothing to complain about. The first floor had wooden sofas, tables, and chairs, while the bedrooms upstairs were fully equipped with bedding. Even the kitchen was stocked with rice, flour, and oil—ready to move in.
There were even fans in the living room and master bedroom, though she wasn’t sure if they were newly installed or already there. She didn’t think it appropriate to ask.
"I’m very satisfied. Please thank Secretary Cao for me and tell him I appreciate his thoughtfulness."
"You’re too kind, Director Nan. I’ll take my leave now. Just let me know if you need anything else."
If Director Nan was happy, then Secretary Cao would be happy—and that meant better days for everyone under him.
Nan Sheng returned to the hospital first, bringing Lin Han a meal for patients and making sure the children were settled before heading back with Little Hou to the family quarters. Since they’d likely be staying in town for a while, at least half their clothes needed to be moved.
By the time Nan Sheng finished organizing everything in the new house, it was already past 10:30 p.m. Little Hou had just brought the children over.
"Sis-in-law, you should rest now. I’ll take care of Regimental Commander Lin—nothing will go wrong."
Nan Sheng knew she’d be exhausted if she went to work at the government office the next day and then visited the hospital, so she agreed.
"Make sure he doesn’t push himself by walking around too much. I’ll bring the kids to see him tomorrow at noon."
"Don’t worry, Sis-in-law. I’ll head back to the hospital now."
The children hadn’t been sleeping well at the hospital, and now, in their new home, they were too tired to explore—just eager to sleep. Nan Sheng boiled water, bathed with Siqi first, and then they both went to the master bedroom.
Sizhe was more meticulous, checking all the doors and windows on the first floor before taking a bath and going to bed. Exhausted, none of the three had trouble sleeping despite the change in surroundings.
When Nan Sheng woke up, she felt much more refreshed.
She bought breakfast for the kids and told them they weren’t allowed to leave the yard—they could only play inside.
The children happily agreed. This new home wasn’t just a two-story house—it had a yard too, and they couldn’t wait to explore.
"Big brother, Mom’s really amazing, isn’t she?"
Sizhe had to agree. Their mother had secured such an impressive house, and there was even a peach tree in the yard, already bearing fruit.
Still, to defend their father’s standing in his sister’s eyes, he reluctantly added, "When Dad gets promoted to regimental commander, they’ll assign us another new house in the family quarters—also with its own yard."
Siqi asked very seriously, "Will it be a two-story house too?"
Sizhe fell silent. That would probably require Dad to become a brigade commander or division commander…
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Han Yongxiang had rushed over in tears as soon as he heard Lin Han had been transferred to the county town. The twenty-something man didn’t even care about looking embarrassed.
He even complained, "Regimental Commander Lin, I wanted to visit you in the city, but the brigade commander wouldn’t let me…"
Lin Han didn’t know whether to scold or comfort him—this was awkward for a grown man. Fortunately, Han Yongxiang eventually cried himself out.
He told Lin Han that Leader Ye would be returning soon. The intelligence network they’d planted across the border had yielded plenty of useful information from captured operatives.
Lin Han had undoubtedly earned another commendation. Division Commander Yao had already recommended him for promotion to regimental commander, but Division Commander Fan had opposed it, arguing, "What’s the use of a regimental commander who can’t fight?"
The two sides were now locked in a heated dispute, with Division Commander Yao causing trouble for Division Commander Fan at the military district headquarters—much to the fury of the commanding officer.
Meanwhile, Nan Sheng was attending her first official day at the county government office. Her workspace had been prepared in advance, but Cao Guoxiang had even arranged a small welcome ceremony—a clear sign of his regard for her.
Combined with her new position as director of the disciplinary inspection committee, everyone treated Nan Sheng with the utmost respect.
After a brief speech, she retreated to her office. Her first order of business was arranging staff dormitories and summoning Liu Song and others to complete their transfer procedures.
She also kept her promise to have tea with Secretary Cao, using the opportunity to inform him of her upcoming plans.
Secretary Cao personally prepared the tea set, and Nan Sheng didn’t stand on ceremony. Though they hadn’t worked together formally, both already had a sense of each other’s temperament.
"Director Nan, I heard about Deputy Regimental Commander Lin’s injury. I meant to visit the hospital yesterday, but I didn’t want to impose while you were so busy."
Nan Sheng understood the underlying implication—this wasn’t just about a visit.
She responded promptly, "You’re too kind, Secretary Cao. You’re always welcome in our home. And I must thank you again for the house—it’s been arranged so thoughtfully, and it’s been a tremendous help."
Hearing this, Cao Guoxiang’s smile grew more genuine. At least his efforts hadn’t been wasted.
"We’re all comrades here—it’s my duty! I assume you’ll be heading to the hospital at noon? If it’s convenient, perhaps we could go together?"
