Traveler of the River of Time and Space

CHAPTER 89: CHAPTER 6: DEMON HUNTER 4
Su Ziyu was already too lazy to explain.
But at this moment, a sudden chaotic noise came from outside, followed by a well-dressed, plump man entering the scene surrounded by a crowd.
He looked like a wealthy merchant but had a touch of aristocratic arrogance.
Van Helsing instantly became much more alert; he splashed water on his face and whispered into Su Ziyu’s ear, "Business has arrived."
After speaking, he put on a stern face and walked up to greet the newcomer coldly.
Melissa, standing nearby, remained calm, not showing any annoyance over Van Helsing’s overnight stay at a brothel, but rather she seemed a bit colder toward Su Ziyu. She probably knew something, as she softly said after seeing Su Ziyu’s puzzled expression, "The last time we were here, we saw signs of Water Ghost activity by the river."
After traveling through so many worlds, Su Ziyu felt his Ability to analyze had grown significantly.
From just a few words, he could infer the general situation.
Van Helsing had been here before. The last time he visited, he saw traces of Water Ghost activity in the nearby river, but he didn’t expend energy to find the Water Ghost then.
As he mentioned earlier, without a mission or bounty, he wouldn’t act.
Apparently.
Someone may have been killed last night.
This explains why Van Helsing said business had arrived. It seems this Demon Hunter viewed his work as a form of business. Su Ziyu didn’t want to judge this, as everyone has their way of living. Demon hunters have a bloody profession, risking their lives to destroy monsters and earn a living is reasonable.
Just like what Van Helsing mentioned during a casual chat,
"We are not heroes; we’re just a bunch of experts dealing with monsters."
Melissa leaned against the pillar, playing with her hair as she sized up Su Ziyu, saying, "They won’t part with their money unless something happens. They only treat us better when they need us."
These two demon hunters didn’t seem affluent.
Van Helsing’s most valuable possessions were likely his equipment. As for Melissa, being a woman, she wore almost no gold or gemstone jewelry. Much of the money earned yesterday might have been spent by Van Helsing at the brothel.
Su Ziyu was unclear about the survival ways of these demon hunters.
However, he sensed a wanderer’s vibe from Van Helsing, living day to day, enjoying life with money, working without it.
It’s likely he never even considered saving for retirement or thought he would live to see such a day.
Things were clear now.
Van Helsing, after taking a quick look around, returned and raised an eyebrow at Su Ziyu, saying, "There are some Water Ghosts in the rivers here."
"They’ve offered a bounty of six Golden Galleons."
"Interested?"
Six Golden Galleons mean six Gold Coins, a significant purchasing power in this world.
"Half each?" Su Ziyu crossed his arms, seemingly jokingly bargaining.
Upon hearing this, Melissa gave him a glare.
Van Helsing chuckled, leaned in, and said, "No can do. I can only offer you forty percent at most."
"Alright," Su Ziyu thought for a moment, glanced at Melissa, and said, "I’ll take two Golden Galleons. But you cover the expenses on the road."
"Deal," Van Helsing nodded immediately.
Cooperation among demon hunters seemed common in this world; otherwise, Van Helsing wouldn’t have accepted his bargaining so easily.
When they set off, Su Ziyu noticeably sensed a hint of fear from the ordinary people toward him.
After revealing their identity as demon hunters, both ordinary people and mercenaries eyed them with a mix of dread and fear, as if looking at something alien. A drunkard of considerable status had died last night, the culprit being a Water Ghost, a monster formed from drowned humans.
Quite common, but often appear in groups.
Van Helsing was an experienced and silent demon hunter at work, utterly different from when he played Gwent Card with Su Ziyu.
"See this?"
"This is a piece of skin from the Water Ghost."
"Someone must have been dragged underwater by it last night. He struggled desperately, tearing this piece of skin from the Water Ghost." Van Helsing held up a small dark blue piece of skin.
At this moment, he seemed like Melissa’s mentor, explaining everything in detail along the way, including the activity range and habits of the Water Ghosts.
"These creatures are easy to deal with on land."
"But in the water, I’m unsure about facing more than three at once," Van Helsing glanced at Su Ziyu, saying, "If there are more than five Water Ghosts, you’d better find some help."
This demon hunter probably had special tracking skills.
Su Ziyu used Spiritual Vision to see the cold aura left by the Water Ghosts, a gray-blue trace. Undead creatures seemed to all have this kind of cold aura. Van Helsing didn’t have Spiritual Vision, but he could sense and smell this aura, then rely on his vast experience to find them. Demon hunters are indeed experts in dealing with these monsters.
Melissa currently lacked such Ability; she was probably still an apprentice demon hunter. Physically, she was only a bit stronger than ordinary people, not reaching the inhuman level of a demon hunter.
Female demon hunters should be quite rare.
Su Ziyu felt this dangerous job was not suitable for women, but for some reason, Melissa was very determined. She listened carefully and learned quickly.
"They should be right below us," Van Helsing stopped before a lake.
He turned to look at Su Ziyu, who was a step behind, and asked, "How’s your swimming?"
"Average," Su Ziyu honestly replied.
Van Helsing frowned slightly, slowly saying, "Then you should take time to learn it; you might encounter a Sea Siren if you act near the coast."
"They can smell us from afar."
Su Ziyu smiled, "Well, don’t worry. I learn fast."
The lake water was a bit chilly.
There seemed to be a faint stench in the water. The bottom was very murky. Demon hunting was indeed a tough job. Van Helsing placed some items by the shore and first dove into the cold lake wielding his sword.
Su Ziyu followed closely behind.
Upon diving to the lake bottom, he saw some rotten corpses buried in the silt; it seemed quite a few people had been victims in the past. Deep in the silt, he discovered some corpses with light blue skin. Their surfaces were covered in many blemishes, and webbed hands and feet had grown. They quickly emerged from the sludge, approaching the three of them at quite a swift pace.
It was Su Ziyu’s first time fighting underwater.
Upon engagement, he realized underwater combat had much resistance, and these Water Ghosts appeared more agile than him.
