Chapter 92 - 9: Witch Hunter 1
CHAPTER 92: CHAPTER 9: WITCH HUNTER 1
Time passed day by day.
Su Ziyu noticed that the golden sand in the Hourglass of Time had decreased somewhat, but the flow of time in this world seemed slow. He might stay in this world longer than he did before.
The relationships among the group had improved a lot since they first met.
"Damn it!"
"Why did I lose again?" Van Helsing said in annoyance, scratching his hair.
As Su Ziyu became more familiar with the rules of Gwent Card, his skills continued to improve. More importantly, he seemed to be on the verge of winning, even when his luck was not great, though Van Helsing’s luck seemed to be even worse.
Therefore, Van Helsing often lost more than he won.
Melissa, sitting nearby preparing food, was also a Demon Hunter who cared little for Gwent. Yes, an apprentice.
"Alright."
"Let’s prepare to eat something." Su Ziyu stood up and directly refused Van Helsing’s plan for another round.
During this time, he learned quite a few survival skills from the Demon Hunters.
If wilderness survival could be considered as a skill level, he should now be at LV1.
The monsters they encountered occasionally along the way did not yield any Source Power Value, possibly because they weren’t polluted, or possibly because their strength was too weak.
Su Ziyu guessed that only leader-level monsters might drop Source Power Value.
"There’s movement! Hoofbeats!" Van Helsing suddenly stood up and said.
The Demon Hunters had strong perception; they could even detect some creatures that were completely invisible.
"Quite a few people. At least six." Su Ziyu exchanged a glance with him, placing his hand on the hilt of his sword.
Tap tap tap.
A series of hoofbeats gradually approached.
Soon, they saw six men dressed in black tight outfits, carrying various weapons. Nearly everyone had a crossbow slung across their back, and their expressions were extremely cold, clearly indicating assassins with bloodstained hands. They noticed Su Ziyu and his group first, their gaze landing on the two men before shifting to Melissa, staring at her for a while, then riding off.
"Witch Hunters," Van Helsing said with a grave look.
In recent years.
Terrible plagues broke out everywhere, leaving many villages and towns abandoned. During their journey, Van Helsing spoke of matters related to witches; many believed the plagues were related to them. Witch Hunters, a recently emerged organization in the past few decades, targeted and hunted witches across regions.
"Be careful of them." Van Helsing whispered, "They are dogs of the Zoroastrianism."
The full name of Zoroastrianism is the Eternal Flame sect.
An intensely flame-worshiping sect, possessing great power in the secular world, they are quite unfriendly to all non-human entities. A few years ago, there were scandals about the massacre of Dwarf Villages.
Witches, also known as Female Warlocks.
They served as court advisors for Human Kingdoms centuries ago, actively engaging for a considerable time. However, later organization of Wizards got embroiled in dirty political struggles, probably suffering more losses than the Demon Hunters, forcing surviving Female Warlocks to hide their identities nowadays.
Like Demon Hunters, Wizards in this world couldn’t bear offspring.
However, most Demon Hunters were male, while the majority of Wizards were female; male Wizards were quite few, even Van Helsing hadn’t encountered many.
Typically, Van Helsing referred to witches as Female Warlocks.
"Let’s move out." After seeing those six Witch Hunters, a trace of worry floated on Van Helsing’s face.
Lund was now not far away.
They traveled through the night and finally reached the vicinity of Lund by noon the next day.
This was a rather prosperous port city.
The population here was about 200,000; before even entering the city, they saw many merchant caravans, including the big job Van Helsing mentioned for making money.
Van Helsing’s expression was quite heavy upon entering the city.
Soon, they discovered a large group of people gathered near the city gate; amidst the crowd was a bloodied column with a woman’s unrecognizable face nailed onto it. Beside it stood three black-clad figures seen a few days ago dressed as Witch Hunters. Van Helsing’s face turned ashen, and Su Ziyu noticed his hand go to his sword hilt but then slowly release with a deep breath.
The woman had been dead for some time.
It’s clear she had been extremely beautiful in life, with waist-length flaxen hair. There was a crossbow arrow wound in her chest, and her arms and legs had burns from flame explosions.
These were likely caused by explosives.
However, in this world, they were alchemical tools, and Van Helsing also possessed an explosive small bottle.
Members of the Eternal Flame sect crafted these explosives, and Van Helsing mentioned their petroleum was more powerful than that of Demon Hunters. Female Warlocks had faced considerable persecution from both secular and church forces in recent years, with Witch Hunters pursuing them everywhere, even areas where Demon Hunters might face attacks.
"Phew." Su Ziyu slightly averted his gaze.
The Female Warlock appeared to have been nailed to the column posthumously, and there surely had to be secular powers backing the Witch Hunters’ actions. Their motives remained unclear.
"Let’s go." Van Helsing’s voice was low and hoarse.
Melissa’s expression was quite sad and angry, coldly staring at the Witch Hunters, suppressing her killing intent.
Suddenly.
Su Ziyu felt a surge of spiritual pressure, a reaction induced by spiritual perception that only arises in the presence of magic turbulence; he looked up toward a window on the street side, spotting a quickly disappearing figure in a gray robe.
Unknown identity.
But definitely a caster!
Van Helsing seemed quite familiar with this place; he led Su Ziyu to a secluded inn.
Su Ziyu discerned the seasoned Demon Hunter was curbing his emotions, for upon entering, he immediately started drinking, his hand clutching the cup trembling slightly.
"Her name was Jenny."
"A very, very kind Female Warlock; her concocted potions saved many lives."
"She wasn’t a powerful witch."
"She mainly mastered some healing magic." Van Helsing’s voice was low and hoarse, his bloodshot eyes rising to look at Su Ziyu, saying slowly, "She saved my life! Twice!"
"These damn Witch Hunters!!!"
At that moment, Van Helsing resembled a ferocious beast ready to devour people, a terrifying look Su Ziyu had never seen in this Demon Hunter.
"Sorry."
"The big business I mentioned might be ruined." Van Helsing downed his drink and said gravely, "The employer here is no longer trustworthy!"
