Chapter 48: Leaving the Yu Family
CHAPTER 48: CHAPTER 48: LEAVING THE YU FAMILY
Yu Changfu had been using a carrying pole to keep Yu Xiaolian at bay, forbidding her from approaching, and even more so from leaving unless she handed over the Silver.
"We didn’t take your Silver. You can search the house if you don’t believe me. We only have a few hundred coins, earned by my father from selling baskets and my mother from her embroidery work, and we spent it all just a few days ago on rice and flour."
Yu Xiaolian turned her clothes pockets inside out to show Yu Changfu and patted her empty body to prove it, "Look, I’m not carrying any money, right? If you don’t let me go find a cart, then I won’t go. Anyway, I don’t want to leave; my father said we should go live in a decrepit temple, eating wind and drinking dew, and I don’t want to go!"
Yu Changfu, with tears and snot all over his face from chili water, mumbled, "Dad, this girl really doesn’t have anything on her; the Silver must be hidden in the house. Let her go, then we can search for the Silver."
Upon hearing Yu Changfu’s words, Yu Changfu finally moved the carrying pole, allowing Yu Xiaolian to leave.
As soon as Yu Xiaolian left, Yu Changfu immediately called Yu Changfu and Madam Cao in to search for the Silver. Madam Cao initially didn’t want to be part of the act of kicking someone when they’re down, having nothing to gain from offending others, she wasn’t willing to do something thankless.
However, upon hearing that it was Yu Changhe who took her mother-in-law’s Silver, she couldn’t help but be tempted, thinking maybe she could find it, and if she was the first to find it, she could quietly hide a piece of Silver and also recover her private savings that had been taken.
Yu Changfu and Madam Cao began to enter the house and searched through boxes and cabinets.
Careful not to overlook any corner, they even dug into the mouse holes covered by old cloth in the corners of the walls.
Yu Changfu was not idle either, moving all the belongings he could from the house.
Sun-shi just watched coldly, without intervening, afraid that if she left Yu Changhe’s side for a moment, he might do something foolish again.
Although Yu Xiaolian had tricked him into thinking she was pregnant, it wasn’t certain whether Yu Changhe believed it or not; losing these belongings was one thing, but she couldn’t lose her husband.
Yu Changfu and Madam Cao searched the entire house but still could not find the Silver, gradually growing agitated, and directly charged forward, grabbing Yu Changhe by the collar and demanding he hand over the money.
Yu Changhe, who had already been beaten and had banged his head against the wall several times, was still dizzy and not fully conscious. Being shaken by Yu Changfu, his head tilted, and he fainted again.
Yu Changhe fainting frightened Yu Changfu, his face turned pale, fearing Yu Changhe might have died, and he staggered backward in shock.
Yu Changfu’s father also changed his expression, stepped forward, checked his breath, and seeing he was still alive, angrily cursed Yu Changfu, "Look at you, scared like that, useless."
When Yu Xiaolian returned, Sun-shi was holding the unconscious Yu Changhe, crying her heart out. Seeing Yu Changhe’s tightly closed eyes, she hurried over, "Mom, what’s wrong with Dad?"
Could it be that in the short time she was gone, Yu Changhe had tried to kill himself again?
"Xiaolian, your father fainted again. Did you manage to borrow the cart?"
"I borrowed it."
Upon hearing Yu Changhe had merely fainted, Yu Xiaolian also breathed a sigh of relief; it was good that he wasn’t dead.
Yu Xiaolian said to Jiang Lin, "Brother Jiang Lin, could you please carry my father onto the ox cart?"
"No, without handing over the Silver, no one is leaving this house." Yu Changfu didn’t know when he had picked up the carrying pole again, blocking the doorway, and beside him stood the old lady Yu, holding a kitchen knife and covered in large red blisters.
The old lady Yu was ugly to begin with, with a face full of wrinkles, now with blisters covering it, she looked even more horrifying.
Holding the kitchen knife, she looked like an old ghost blocking the way.
Jiang Lin, carrying Yu Changhe, was thus blocked at the door.
Sun-shi leaned forward, "There’s no Silver, only a life. If you have the guts, cut me with your kitchen knife!"
Sun-shi’s fierce look made the old lady Yu, who was holding the kitchen knife, hesitate and retreat a few steps.
"Today, if you don’t give up the Silver, I will break your leg, don’t believe me? Just try."
The fact that the old lady Yu was frightened did not mean Yu Changfu was scared. He swung the carrying pole and aimed a hard blow at Sun-shi’s shin.
Unable to withstand the pain, Sun-shi staggered, almost falling, luckily Yu Xiaolian supported her from behind.
Jiang Lin, burdened with Yu Changhe, was of no help; Yu Xiaolian stepped forward, "You were the ones telling us to leave, and now you are the ones not letting us go. Make up your minds; if you don’t let us go, then we’ll stay."
