CHAPTER 90: CHAPTER 89: IT’S EVERYONE’S FIRST TIME BEING HUMAN—WHY SHOULD ANYONE SPOIL ANYONE ELSE?
Little Tiger and Grandma Sun kept pushing a bag of pastries back and forth, neither the grandmother nor the grandson willing to eat.
Yu Xiaolian stepped forward, pointing at the waxed paper packages on the kang bed, "These are all pastries. My mother asked me to buy a lot. You don’t have to be reluctant to eat them. These things don’t keep for long. If you all are too reluctant to eat them, they’ll spoil in a few days, they’ll grow moldy."
Biscuits can be stored for a longer period, but breads, in cooler weather, can only be kept for ten days at most.
Grandma Sun looked at the various sizes of waxed paper packages on the kang in surprise, "Why did your mother buy so many pastries? How much did this cost?
Why hasn’t your mother come back? After you were kicked out by the Yu Family, why didn’t you come to us for help? Where are you all living now?"
Grandma Sun asked several questions in a row, and Yu Xiaolian answered them calmly, one by one.
However, half of her answers were true, and half were false.
Upon hearing that Sun is pregnant, Grandma Sun burst into tears of joy, repeatedly asking Yu Xiaolian several times, and only after receiving affirmative answers each time did she believe that her daughter was really pregnant, and gratefully thanked the Immortals.
Mrs. Xu saw that Yu Xiaolian was being evasive on some questions, so she kept pressing her, asking how they survived being kicked out of River Bay Village without a penny, and how they became prosperous.
Yu Xiaolian, holding back her displeasure, tried to maintain her usual tone, "We just met a benefactor who helped us."
"What benefactor? Your parents are cooped up in the village all day, who could they possibly know? Do we know them?" Mrs. Xu pressed for details.
Yu Xiaolian replied coldly, "You don’t know them."
Mrs. Xu wanted to ask further, but Sun Fengshou pushed her aside, "Enough, the kid doesn’t want to talk about it. Why keep digging for details?"
Mrs. Xu shot a glare at Sun Fengshou, speaking with a sarcastic tone, "Your sister found a way to make money but is keeping it tight, afraid her dear brother would find out."
Sun Fengshou glared fiercely at Mrs. Xu, "Say one more word, just one more, and see if I dare to hit you or not?"
Mrs. Xu stood up abruptly, hands on her hips, shouting, "What? I’m saying it! Your sister has money and your dear brother can’t even catch a break from it, I’m saying it, and what can you do about it?"
Without hesitation, Sun Fengshou slapped Mrs. Xu across the face, and just as he was about to hit her again, Grandma Sun grabbed Sun Fengshou’s arm.
"Son, talk it out nicely, don’t resort to hitting!"
"Mother, every time I try to hit her you stop me, every time I want to hit her you stop me, look at what you’ve indulged her to become." Sun Fengshou was truly angry today.
Grandma Sun believed it wasn’t easy for her son to marry a wife and feared the family would fall apart, so she had been endlessly tolerant and forgiving towards Mrs. Xu over the years.
Other families’ daughters-in-law would encounter rules and discipline the moment they entered the household.
Not so in their family, not only was that absent, but Grandma Sun handed over the family’s finances to Mrs. Xu right after she entered the household, asking Sun Fengshou to give all his earnings to her.
Mrs. Xu not only didn’t appreciate her mother-in-law’s kindness, but instead became increasingly overbearing. Sun Fengshou’s desire to hit her wasn’t a sudden impulse, it had been brewing for a long time.
"Good for you, Sun Fengshou, you dare to hit me! Do you think now that your sister’s getting rich, you’ve got some backbone?"
Mrs. Xu never imagined that Sun Fengshou would really dare to hit her, and she somewhat regretted taunting him earlier, but backing down now would be humiliating.
Sun Fengshou, with a stern expression, snorted coldly, "For the sake of our mother and Little Tiger, I’ve tolerated you for quite some time now. If you dare to stir up trouble again, you can go back to your family, we, the Sun Family, don’t want you anymore."
"Good for you, you heartless man, and here we haven’t even struck it rich yet, and you’re already thinking of replacing your wife? Let me tell you, no way!
I’ve given birth to a son for your Sun Family, you can’t divorce me!"
Mrs. Xu, though furious enough to explode after being slapped, was more afraid of Sun Fengshou abandoning her.
She had endured the tough days in the past, and now that the Sun Family was about to enjoy the fruits of Sun’s luck and live well.
She’d be a fool to step aside for another woman at this point.
Holding her face, Mrs. Xu clung to Grandma Sun’s arm, crying, "Mother, you love me the most, you have to talk to Fengshou, don’t let him divorce me!"
Grandma Sun sighed repeatedly, soothingly patting the back of Mrs. Xu’s hand, "He’s just speaking in anger, he won’t really leave you."
Yu Xiaolian never expected that after bringing so many things, what she saw was not the harmonious scene she had imagined.
She was relieved that when they were thrown out by the Yu Family, they were fortunate not to come to the Sun Family for shelter, otherwise, who knew what kind of scene Mrs. Xu would create.
Even giving gifts ended up in a mess.
Mrs. Xu was unreasonable and insatiable.
"Fengshou is angry, you’d better go to the west room and stay for a while, I’ll persuade him." Saying that, Grandma Sun nudged Mrs. Xu secretly, and Mrs. Xu, after glancing at the stone-faced Sun Fengshou, was afraid of being hit again and unusually listened, heading to the west room.
Grandma Sun stroked Little Tiger’s hair, who was startled, then picked him up and placed him on the kang, giving him cookies, having him sit and eat on the kang.
Little Tiger had tears in his eyes, and under Grandma Sun’s expectant gaze, he took a small bite of the cookie, then dumbly nodded, "Delicious."
Then, he handed the cookie to Grandma Sun, his voice tinged with sobs, "Grandma, you eat."
Grandma Sun smiled lovingly and pushed the cookie back, "Tiger should eat, our Tiger should eat more to grow big and strong."
"Mother, I don’t want to live with Mrs. Xu anymore." After a long silence, Sun Fengshou finally spoke.
Grandma Sun’s expression changed, "No, no matter what, Little Tiger can’t be without a mother. What stepmother would genuinely be good to a child? Or are you planning to never marry again?"
Sun Fengshou sat on the edge of the kang, his face filled with bitterness, "I’d... I’d rather be a bachelor for life than live with her. These years, she’s been bossing you around, I’ve wanted to hit her for a long time. Since I’ve already hit her today, let’s just end it."
Sun Fengshou had endured Mrs. Xu’s nonsense for years and finally exploded today.
Grandma Sun never expected her son to dislike Mrs. Xu so thoroughly.
"Son, I know you’re filial. Seeing Mrs. Xu ordering me around daily doesn’t sit well with you.
But I’m old, how many more years will I live? If I endured these past years, there’s no reason to cause a disturbance in your home because of me now."
"Mother, I..." Sun Fengshou, a big man, already had tears in his voice at this moment.
Yu Xiaolian, as a bystander, should have kept out of it, but remembering Sun’s plan to bring Grandma Sun and the others along if they escape next year.
With Mrs. Xu being such a troublemaker, Yu Xiaolian truly had no interest in taking her along, she had no desire to match wits and strength with a demanding aunt every day.
She found it burdensome.
Thinking of this, Yu Xiaolian spoke up, "Life is short, if you always live feeling stifled, aren’t you wronging yourself too much?"
Everyone only gets one chance to be born, who is supposed to indulge whom?
