CHAPTER 33: CHAPTER 33: I DON’T HAVE IT, BUT OTHERS DO
Li Xiulan hurried over in the afternoon with clothes for Gu’s father and Mrs. Gu, accompanied by her daughter who worked in Jiang City.
Gu Qin was Li Xiulan’s second daughter, a few months older than Gu Yan, making her Gu Yan’s cousin.
Though both lived in Jiang City, they had never really interacted.
The reason was likely that Gu Yan’s family treated her as an outsider, and besides, Gu Qin seemed to be doing well in Jiang City, wearing clothes from recognizable brands.
Meanwhile, Gu Yan was struggling at the bottom, earning a meager salary, and so had no interest in associating with her.
Gu Qin’s eyeliner-highlighted eyes tilted slightly upward, giving off a sense of arrogance as she looked at Gu Yan.
"Gu Yan, long time no see. How’s work?"
Gu Yan gave a faint smile, "Not bad."
With that reply, Gu Qin said no more, after all, it was just a casual question.
She thought Gu Yan wouldn’t have found any good job anyway.
On the other side, Li Xiulan asked Mrs. Gu, "How’s brother doing? What did the doctor say?"
"He needs surgery on his leg, and also heart surgery, the doctor said it’ll cost about a million!"
A million!
Upon hearing this, both Li Xiulan and Gu Qin’s faces stiffened.
"Ho-how can it be so much?!"
Mrs. Gu started complaining and lamenting again as she spoke, "Why is my destiny so bitter, adopting a daughter who’s a jinx, now bringing ruin to our whole family! Isn’t this taking my life?!"
Li Xiulan gave Gu Yan a look devoid of emotion, then stiffly held Mrs. Gu’s shoulders, offering symbolic comfort, "Sister-in-law, there’ll always be a way."
"A million, not just a hundred bucks! What way could there possibly be!"
Even if Mrs. Gu pressured Gu Yan further, she knew Gu Yan couldn’t possibly come up with that much money.
Without money for the surgery, Gu’s father could only wait for death!
Li Xiulan also thought a million was too much, even if they sold everything they had, they couldn’t scrape together that amount, and besides, why should she help gather it?
Among the sisters-in-law, they seemed cordial on the surface, but each was very selfish. When disaster strikes, surface-level acts are fine, but if something real needed doing, who knows how they’d evade it.
"Aunt, don’t worry too much. I’ll help think of a way."
Just then, Gu Qin spoke gently, and Mrs. Gu looked up with red eyes, seeing Gu Qin adorned in brand names and with such a refined demeanor, it seemed she saw hope.
"What way do you have?" she asked eagerly.
"I’ll have to think on it, but rest assured, I won’t stand by and do nothing." Gu Qin promised her.
Mrs. Gu became excited, her expression turning much kinder, "Gu Qin, your uncle’s life is counting on you to find a way."
Gu Qin gave a slight smile, her eyes exuding boundless charm.
Gu Yan only felt that such allure was typical of women familiar with that kind of setting.
But she quickly pushed that thought aside.
Although Gu Qin could be more casual, loved beauty, and had strong vanity, she was very proud, always feeling superior to others. Just for this alone, it was impossible she’d degenerate to that kind of place.
Gu Qin and Li Xiulan didn’t stay in the ward for long before leaving.
Once out of the ward, Li Xiulan immediately pulled Gu Qin quickly to a deserted corner, lowering her voice disdainfully, "Are you crazy, agreeing to help them think of a way! That’s a million, can you come up with it?!"
Even if she could, Li Xiulan was adamantly unwilling to let them use it.
Gu Qin smiled confidently, "Of course, I don’t have a million, but someone else does."
