Wasteland Development Diary
Chapter 41: The Paradoxical Entity
Qian Su clutched the copper kettle, her lips moving slightly.
"Heavenly People, that explains everything."
"He looks like he's lived a life of luxury, such an aura and habits are hard to fake. He possesses the power to control and drive the Guangna Species without fear of nearing the Dead Sea. He's indifferent to the attacks from the Dead Sea Knights' warships, handles things with Ji Zhang crisply and cleanly, and even has time to study the Dead Sea Aliens stranded on Land..."
"But what is really here?"
Qian Su looked towards the large truck below the lookout tower, "To even attract Heavenly People?"
Mission did not respond.
The girl took off her glasses and wiped the lenses with a handkerchief. "Well, the behavior of the Heavenly People is inherently hard to understand, that's just how they are. Heavenly People just do as they please, but as a citizen of Heavenly Kingdom, there's much more to consider."
"Assisting and serving the Heavenly People is a civic duty that you simply cannot escape."
"Thought to enjoy the show, and now we ended up dealing with the warship... These days, making money is so difficult."
She jumped down from the lookout tower and agilely climbed into the driver's cabin, "Partner, start driving forward, I need to think about what to use to repel the Dead Sea Knights' ship."
The heavy truck sped towards the shallow shoals of the Dead Sea.
Qian Su held a telescope, constantly monitoring the distance.
"This is troublesome, here comes the Medium Patrol Vessel… It's the Red Kestrel."
The telescope was already showing bright flashes.
The warship was bombarding the Dead Sea Alien.
Qian Su frowned as she watched, "These guys want to snatch the Alien… Never mind, let's make our stance clear first."
"Target Red Kestrel, 'C-grade Light-blocking Bomb' ready, triple-shot mode, block its main gun's light imprint from coalescing the Death Light."
The container behind the truck emitted a clicking mechanical sound.
Suddenly, the heavy truck said, "The situation has changed."
Qian Su noticed it too.
Dead Sea Alien bodies brightly illuminated, rising up one by one, then plummeting towards the Dead Sea, causing continuous flashes and booms which delayed momentarily, and the truck also experienced vertical shaking from the repeated shock waves.
After a dozen seconds, the fiery light at the Dead Sea gradually dissipated.
On the heavy truck's windshield appeared a wave ripple akin to raindrops, with only one distinct high-luminance red dot; other smaller red dot in the radiation range were speeding away in all directions.
"The mark of Red Kestrel has vanished, and the nearby Guangna Species are fleeing."
The real-time information captured by her partner did not surprise Qian Su.
She clicked her tongue in wonder, "After all, he is a Heavenly People, a noble of Heavenly Kingdom as overbearing as ever… It's a shame we were a bit slow to react, but better slow than never. Partner, speed up!"
The engine of the heavy truck abruptly roared louder.
However, it hadn't been running at high speeds for long before a blue-and-white colored tricycle motorcycle blocked it.
"Sand Port Tianjin Knights, third middle squad on duty, I am Tianjin Knight Cui Mao, and this area is under my squad's jurisdiction. Pull your vehicle over to the side, and show your identity proof!"
"Stop immediately, and show your identity proof!"
Qian Su pursed her lips and glanced at the rear-view mirror, "Another Knight Order, what a coincidence."
The truck slowly stopped.
She opened the door and spread her hands in a gesture.
"Hello, I am a legitimate businessman, I have a passport of Heavenly Kingdom."
Qian Su showed a professional smile to the man stepping off the motorcycle, "It must be tough for Knight Sir to be on duty in such a remote place."
"Duty calls, please cooperate."
The other's voice was utterly flat.
...
After confirming that Jade City had thoroughly destroyed the organ ship, Zhou Yi reconnected the three Light Blockers and buried the Chain Line underground to ensure it wouldn't attract attention.
Regarding the resilience of Jade City, Red Kestrel couldn't make a judgment.
"There are strength ratings for the Guangna Body and various devices and props based on the results of their extensive use. Creatures like the clawed pig and the long-necked crocodile, for instance, are supported by a large amount of data."
"Architectural lives are incredibly rare, and each is a unique being with different structures and inherited collective memories. Only a very few have left behind substantial data records and basic electronic illustrations."
After connecting to the Recursive City machine stack, Red Kestrel now served as a strategist capable of resolving many of Zhou Yi's queries.
It continued, "Architectural life is a greatly contradictory existence."
"It possesses astonishing power that other forms of life covet and cannot reach, able to directly absorb vast amounts of Death Light for its own operation. Born at least as a grade C machine body, it can gradually enhance its strength over time by continuously accumulating Death Light."
"Unless completely shattered by a more powerful external force, they are naturally immortal beings, the closest existence to eternal life in this world. The long life that many organisms desire is innate to them."
"But their weakness also stems from this fact."
"The self-awareness of architectural life arises from the interaction between its structural body and collective memory. They have a completely enclosed consciousness, only moving under unfavorable conditions to seek stable and abundant energy zones."
"They cannot communicate, are not understandable, like a person who has lived their whole life within a sealed castle. They can see the changes in the outside world but lack the steps to venture outside. They must rely on their own strength to think, and thus their consciousness may even evolve slower than an insect's."
"A giant's body, a baby's brain—that is the contradiction of architectural life. Their attempts to probe or interact with the outside world can result in the destruction of other lives and even the collapse of the regional environment."
"They are fundamentally different from all known forms of life, born outsiders from the Dead Sea."
Zhou Yi glanced at the towering damaged building next to him.
He remembered his childhood fondness for watching ants, which he could do for hours.
The ants would carry leaves, dead insects, and various human foods that had fallen to the ground.
When he felt happy, Zhou Yi would pour water on them to see how they dealt with the deluge.
Or even step on them to observe their reaction.
The ants would always scatter in panic and then stubbornly return to carry away their hard-won prey.
His younger self to the ants,
Perhaps equates to the architectural lives to the new humans now.
Fortunately, with him as the homeowner's committee member, Jade City had become much more normal.
Zhou Yi voiced a lingering question, "How do we identify architectural life? If they are in the Dead Sea, could they be discerned from a heap of structures if they have fallen into slumber?"
"That's not possible."
Red Kestrel explained, "Upon entering the Dead Sea, architectural lives revert to a liminal state of life and death, continuing to absorb various life consciousness signals amid the Death Light, hardly distinguishable from other Dead Sea structures."
"To ascertain if Dead Sea structures have transformed into lifeforms, they must be dredged up from the sea floor, entirely removed from the confines of the Dead Sea environment."
"But doing so is prohibitively costly. Venturing into the sea floor is highly dangerous, and then there's the monumental task of extracting the enormous structures intact all the way to land... If luck is on your side, you'll then have a fully awakened architectural life."
"Their awakening represents an unpredictable and massive threat."
The high costs, the low probability of a payoff, unpredictable outcomes... These factors make developing Dead Sea Aliens a purely theoretical venture, unlikely to attract individuals or organizations willing to make a losing investment.
So, when Jade City emerged, the Dead Sea Knights also wanted to seize it.
Zhou Yi thought.
Jade City at 15% had already managed to destroy a battle cruiser, who knows what state it would be at 100%?
