Chapter 277 Pizza

19 min left

At Vanguard Law Firm, Vanessa shot Kaia a mock re as she returned from a week off.

“Seriously? You left mepletely in the dark!” she said with a teasing pout.

Kaia gave a sheepish smile. “I know, I know–my bad. I didn’t mean to! I swear I’ll make it up to you.”

Truthfully, she hadn’t lied.

In the beginning, her rtionship with Lucien had been on uncertain footing–she genuinely didn’t know how things would turn out.

And beyond that, she just hadn’t been ready for all the

attention.

Those curious–or downright envious–nces from her colleagues made her more than a little uneasy.

“Well, well, if you don’t take me out for a meal today, I’m never going to forgive you,” Vanessa huffed, crossing her arms.

Kaiaughed. “Deal! You pick the ce–my treat.”

Vanessa immediately got down to business, scrolling through

They ordered arge pie, with half made extra spicy for Vanessa’s taste—Kaia, being pregnant, had to steer clear of anything too fiery.

Not long after they sat down, Kaia’s phone buzzed.

It was Lucien: [Honey, did you have lunch yet?]

Chris had apparently gone to drop off the lunch box at her office, only to find her missing. He’d ended up taking it back to the car.

That was when Kaia remembered Lucien’s very specific instructions—from now on, the maid would be preparing all her meals, every single day.

She quickly texted back: [I’m out eating with a colleague. Tell Chris he can head back.]

Lucien replied almost instantly: [What are you eating?]

The mouthwatering aroma of spicy pizza drifted up from the table, and Kaia’s stomach rumbled.

She nced at Vanessa’s half, practically dripping with chili

gil and felt a pang of guilt. Still, she tapped out a casual reply; 278 Just some private kitchen ce. Nothing too fancy.]

It wasn’t exactly a lie–she was only eating the non–spicy slices, after all. But she still felt a little bad for bending the truth.

After the meal, though, all guilt was forgotten. The pizza hadpletely won her over. She was already daydreaming about ordering another one for dinner.

When Kaia got home and flopped into her seat at the dinner table, she eyed the beautifully arranged meal prepared specifically for expectant mothers–and let out a loud burp.

“I’m not hungry. I’ll eatter,” she muttered, waving it off.

Both Allen and Lucien frowned at the same time.

“Not hungry? Didn’t you eat lunch around noon?” Allen asked, puzzled.

It was already 6:30 p.m. She should’ve been starving by now— and even if she wasn’t, surely the baby was.

“Come on, just have a little,” Lucien urged gently, sliding a bowl of soup toward her.

Kaia barely nced at it before a sudden wave of nausea hit her. She fought it off, took one reluctant spoonful–and bolted to the bathroom.

Lucien’s brows furrowed. He followed her quickly.

By the time he got there, she had already flushed the toilet, her face pale and drawn.

“What happened? Was it the soup?” he asked, his voice full of

concern.

Kaia looked up at him, pitiful. “Honey, I want pizza. I really don’t want this stuff.”

Lucien was stunned.

He hesitated. iCan /iipregnant /iwomen even eat ipizza/i…?

Lucien had given the chef and housekeepers a meticulous list of dietary dos and don’ts for pregnant women, terrified that the wrong dish might harm the baby.

“Honey, pizza’s greasy and spicy,” he said patiently. “It’s better to avoid it, just to be safe.”

But Kaia wasn’t having it. A tear clung to hershes as she pouted, “I can get the non–spicy kind. I had some at lunch, and I’m perfectly fine.”

Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “You told me you had home cuisine for

lunch.”

Kaia froze–caught.

“I… I only had a little. That pizza ce also serves home–style dishes,” she mumbled. Then her voice rose in defiance.

“What’s the big deal, Lucien? Do I not even get to decide what I eat anymore?”

Lucien rubbed his temples, feeling the start of a headache. He hadn’t expected her mood to shift so fast. He reached out to hug her, but she pushed him away.

“Don’t touch me!” she sobbed. “You only care about the baby. You’re always going on about having a daughter. You don’t care about me at all!”

Her tears began to fall in earnest, and Lucien panicked.

“No, no, honey–don’t cry. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you. How about this—I’ll call Landon right now. If he says it’s okay, I’ll have the kitchen make you pizza immediately, alright?b” /b

Kaia didn’t even know why she was crying so hard. Just the thought that he might care more about the baby than her was enough to unravel herpletely.

Lucien gently scooped her up and carried her to the bed, grabbing tissues to dab at her tears.

“Honey, please. The doctor said you need to stay calm and happy.”

“You’re always quoting the doctor,” she sniffled. “You don’t care about me, not really.”

Lucien sighed, cupping her face with both hands. “Okay, I’m sorry. I’m wrong. I know I messed up. But how could you say I don’t care about you?”

He leaned closer, his voice tender.

“Didn’t I just tell you yesterday? You’re my number one— always. Even before the baby. You’re more important to me than anything, even myself.”

Kaia’s sobs gradually faded. After crying her eyes out, she began to realize—maybe she had overreacted a little.

Lucien quietly stepped aside and gave Landon a call for backup.

“Lucien,” Landon said, “this is normal. Pregnant women get super emotional–me the hormones. I’m serious. Alyssa cried every single day for the first few months.”

Lucien frowned. “And what did you do?”

“I learned to shut up and go with the flow,” Landon chuckled. “Once I stopped pushing back, things got a lot smoother.”

Lucien was speechless. Alyssa really had Landon wrapped around her little finger.

“Well then,” Lucien said dryly, “if I catch you arguing with her next time, I’ll give you a hard time.”

Landon blinked.

What idid /iiI /iido/ii? /i

He’d taken the call to help, and this was the thanks he got?

After hanging up, Lucien returned to Kaia’s side and gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.

“Honey, Landon said it’s okay–you can have some non–spicy pizza. Where did you get lunch today? Let’s go there again. Just the two of us.”

A faint glimmer sparked in Kaia’s tear–filled eyes, her voice still thick with emotion.

“Really?”
