emChapter 324 Epilogue: Ka and Calvin XIII /em
em Bruno, now ustomed to being ordered around, resignedly gathered the information for Calvin. /em
em“Here’s the file. Brenda does love freeloading, but don’t worry –she doesn’t actually bully Ka. Ka’s practically the family favorite. She wouldn’t tolerate unfair treatment.” /em
emEven so, Calvin couldn’t help holding a grudge against Brenda -her tone with Ka in the shop had been downright rude. /em
em A few dayster, John found himself itching to return to Calvin’s wine club, partly for the unfinished chess game. /em
emCalvin spent most of his days at the club, so he wasn’t surprised when John showed up again. /em
em“Sir Lewis, back to grace us with your presence?” /em
emJohn signed up for a membership, and Calvin didn’t refuse. If he hadn’t charged him, John wouldn’t havee back. /em
em“Let’s pick up where we left off. You didn’t destroy the board, did you?” /em
em Calvin smiled, “I had it cleaned and stored. But I remember our game–let me reset it for you.” /em
emJohn had been slightly disappointed at first, but Calvin’s response impressed him. /em
emAs they yed, John asked, “Calvin, nning to stay here long–term? Not going back to the States?” /em
emCalvin didn’t hide his intentions. “I’ll be here for the next couple of years–at least until I win my girlfriend back.” /em
emJohn was momentarily speechless. /em
emHis ex–girlfriend happens to be my granddaughter. /em
em“Calvin, sometimes it’s better to move forward. The past isn’t always meant to be revisited.” /em
emCalvin didn’t take the bait. “John, I think Ka and I are a great match.” /em
emJohn scoffed, “If that were true, you wouldn’t have let her /em
emdown before!” /em
em“I didn’t. But I saw Ka’s aunt giving her a hard time at the shop the other day–trying to take clothes without paying. Now that’s bullying.” /em
em John’s ears perked up. “When was this?” /em
em Calvin smiled, “Just a few days ago. Didn’t Ka mention it?” /em
emSuddenly, John lost interest in chess. /em
emAfter seeing John off, Calvin returned upstairs. When a staff member asked if the board should be put away, he waved it off. /em
em“Leave it. Resetting’s a hassle.” /em
emJohn had barely stepped through the door when he spotted Brenda, decked out in jewels. /em
emSeeing him, her smile dimmed. “John, you were out today too?” /em
emJohn huffed, “What, are you the only one allowed to enjoy yourself? /em
em“Brenda, you should set an example. Your wasteful habits have rubbed off on your sons. Remember that scandal with that celebrity? Disgraceful!” /em
emBrenda’s two sons were yboys, the pr opposite of Mark. /em
emMark possessed, theycked. /em
emEvery v /em
em Brenda bristled. “They don’t have serious roles in thepany. What else are they supposed to do?” /em
emJohn snapped, “Nonsense! Are youining about the positions Ellen gave them? /em
em“With their irresponsible attitudes, what could they handle? And Ka isn’t even in the family business, yet she’s not out gallivanting! /em
em“Besides, Damien gives you more than enough allowance. Why were you trying to skip payment at Ka’s shop?” /em
emBrenda’s face flushed with anger. “Don’t listen to Ka’s lies!” /em
em“Enough. Ka didn’t tell me! But mark my words–stay away from her shop. If I hear about this again, I’ll have a long talk with Damien about your spending.” /em
emBrenda hadn’t expected John to find out. /em
emFuming, she skipped dinner and waited for her husband at /em
emtheir hotel suite. /em
emWhen Damien Lewis finally returned, he massaged his temples at Brenda’s tirade. /em
em“Enough, Brenda. I’m swamped with the U.S. project ns 476 /em
em with Ellen. He’s shifting focus back there, so I don’t have time for petty drama. Stay out of Ka’s way. She’s my niece—act like a proper aunt and stop mooching.” /em
emBrenda was stunned that Damien took Ka’s side. /em
emShe stormed off to the guest room, refusing to speak to him. /em
emAs for Damien, hisst thought before bed was how to make it up to Ka. /em
emThe next morning, Ka noticed Brenda’s absence at breakfast. /em
emA maid informed John, “Mrs. Brenda Lewis says she’s unwell and won’t be joining.” /em
emJohn shrugged. “Send the family doctor. Have her meals brought upstairs–keep them light.” /em
emDamien smiled at Ka. “I heard your business is booming. Brenda needs a gown for next month’s charity g–pick something you think would suit her. I’ll transfer the money.” /em
emKa nodded. “Of course. Thank you.” /em
em She wasn’t about to refuse payment. /em
em When Damien returned with a stunning red dress, Brenda lit up. “Where’d you get this? It’s gorgeous.” /em
