When the Wind is Sweet: The Fairy Tale of Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster
Chapter 16: Threats from the Adoptive Father
CHAPTER 16: CHAPTER 16: THREATS FROM THE ADOPTIVE FATHER
"What do you want me to say?" The man looked at her with an elegant detachment, his tone teasing, "A prenuptial agreement? A postnuptial agreement?"
"..." She pressed her lips together to hide her nervousness, forced to meet his gaze.
"What’s that little head of yours thinking all the time?" Adrian Lancaster toned down his presence and reassured her once more, "Relax, I won’t ask you for a divorce."
He didn’t want to give the old man a heart attack.
As she looked at him, Faye Turner still hadn’t fully processed his identity as the CEO of Prestige Group.
Under the warm yellow light, Adrian Lancaster gazed at the girl’s pure features and flawless skin, and her shifting eyes subtly tugged at his heart. Sometimes, she really did resemble his beloved Sienna.
Just then, his grandfather called in for a video chat.
Adrian Lancaster snapped back to reality and answered, a gentle smile on his face, "Grandpa."
"Adrian, have you taken Faye out for a big meal?" The old man had always kept this in mind, "Eating dumplings on your wedding night was unfair. You must make up for it with a feast."
Instead of answering, he switched the camera to show the table full of dishes, then panned it to the girl standing by the round table.
The grandpa was overjoyed, "Hahaha! Wonderful! Faye! Faye!" Even his tone changed.
"Grandpa!" The girl quickly stepped forward and took the phone from him, her smile radiant and voice sweet, "Adrian kept saying he wanted to take me out for a big meal, and he finally got the time today."
"That’s wonderful!" The old man was so happy he couldn’t stop smiling, "I won’t disturb you two then. Enjoy your meal and have a nice chat!"
It was clear that the grandpa genuinely liked her, and it had been a long time since he’d seen his grandpa laugh so heartily.
After the video call ended, Faye returned the phone.
Adrian Lancaster stood up, "You eat by yourself. I’m leaving first." He took the expensive suit draped over the chair and turned to leave without waiting for the girl to sit down.
Faye Turner looked at the closed door, feeling suddenly a bit sad, although she wasn’t sure why.
Wasn’t it normal for him to ignore her? He was the high and mighty CEO.
In this world, no one is obligated to treat anyone else well.
Faye Turner looked at the dishes for a couple of seconds in contemplation, summoned the waiter, and took thirty to-go boxes to pack up everything on the table.
Then she took a cab to her rented apartment to share a good meal with her mom and brother.
"Is my brother-in-law really this generous?" Milo Turner, who was at the height of adolescence, had never eaten such a lavish spread, "There’s even abalone!"
"Eat as much as you like if you enjoy it." Faye lovingly patted his head.
Chloe Gable appeared concerned, "Faye, are you happy?" She felt tonight’s packed dishes were unusual and hadn’t been informed in advance.
The girl lifted her eyes as her mother asked, "Has something happened?"
"It’s nothing, Mom." The girl ate and smiled brightly, "He’s been on a business trip recently and doesn’t have time to visit, so he had these dishes ordered specially for me to bring over."
Seeing her daughter looking fine, Chloe didn’t dwell on it further.
After dinner, she helped her mother put the leftover dishes in the fridge, "I’ll think of a way to pay for Milo’s tuition, so don’t worry too much."
Sitting on the bus back to Aqua Flora Residences, Faye was just about to close her eyes to rest when her phone rang.
She fished it out to see that it was her father, Vincent Turner, calling.
She didn’t want to pick up at first, hesitated for a few seconds, but then swiped to answer.
"Faye, you got married?" Vincent Turner questioned angrily, "Where’s the dowry?!"
"You’ve got the nerve to call me?" The girl’s tone was indifferent, she really didn’t want to deal with him. Selling her off for a mere two hundred thousand was inhuman!
"I may not have given birth to you, but I raised you! That’s an indisputable fact! You must repay me!" Vincent Turner began to morally blackmail her, "Otherwise, you’re a thankless wretch!"
Enraged, Faye directly hung up the call.
In the next second, he called again. Faye was truly annoyed, but she thought, if she didn’t clarify things, this would cause bigger issues in the future.
So, she answered again.
"Gather a million for me in a week! Or I’ll find your husband and ask him for it! I’ll eventually discover who he is!" Vincent Turner threatened bluntly, "You wouldn’t want him to know about your family background, would you?"
Without waiting for Faye’s response, he hung up, thinking he had her cornered.
