When Jessica heard this, she got anxious.
“No way! Your money wasn’t earned for free, you know. You have to be frugal with it,” she
said, then shed Maxine a big smile.
“I’m already very happy to be here! And with you around, I am even happier!”
Maxine gazed at Jessica, and unexpectedly, memories of the past surfaced of her bringing Brian to the amusement park.
Back thenb, /bBrian was only a year older than Jessica, acting like a little adult with a serious face, always busy with cram school and extracurricr sses. Worried he’d get too stressed, Maxine once took a day off for him and brought him to the amusement park.
But Brian seemed unhappy even while ying, and when Maxine asked what was wrong, he wouldn’t say.
Later, he told Sebastian that he only went to keep Maxinepany, but in fact, he didn’t want to go at all and found it childish.
At that time, Maxine felt difort, yet she couldn’t bring herself to me the child.
Now, looking at Jessica’s smile, she suddenly felt a pang of grievance.
She hugged Jessica tightly and said softly, “Jessica, I want you to be happy and carefree, so don’t overthink things. The reason I want bto /bbe family with you is because I want you to be happy forever.”
Jessica buried her face in Maxine’s embrace, muffled an “Mmm,” and said, “Being family with you, I’m very happy. Just as happy as being bwith /bMommy.”
Maxine let go of her. Seeing Jessica’s eyes and nose all red, she couldn’t help butugh. “What’s this? Are you about bto /bcry?”
Jessica shook her head vigorously, saying seriously, “I’m a big kid now. I don’t cry!”
Maxine affectionately tapped Jessica’s nose, then said tentatively, “Jessica, you’re about to be my real family. I know you miss your mom, but I want us to get closer. How about we change how you call me?”
Jessica’srge eyes flickered with unease. She was unsure of how to address Maxine.
Maxine smiled gently. “Well, but if you don’t want to call me Mommy, yet, it’s okay.”
At this, Jessica’s face rxed with relief. “Mmhmm! Alrighty!”
Both were over the moon now, and it felt as if their rtionship had grown closer without any conscious effort.
Maxine took Jessica on a full–blown amusement park tour, trying every ride and even braving the pirate ship after thorough consideration.
-They were having a st,pletely oblivious that a McLaren parked across the street outside the amusement park was keeping ba /bclose eye on them.
The McLaren’s window rolled down, revealing Sebastian’s face.
He slightly narrowed his eyes, watching from a distance as Maxine and Jessica, hand in hand, happily emerged from the entrance of the amusement park. They were pretty much like a mother and daughter, chatting andughing, their closeness unmistakable.
Sebastian felt a bit dazed.
In his memory, Maxine and Brian had never been like this.
Unsure if it was for Brian or something else, but he was suddenly filled with a mix of anger.
In the passenger seat, Charles cautiously nced bat /bhis boss’s stern expression, hesitating to speak.

Charles cleared his throat before replying softly, “Sir, it seems Madam is really set on adopting that girl. The paperwork is already in bmotion/b. The Sants Orphanage is almost done with the procedures, and the adoption certificate should be issued in the next couple of days.”
