CHAPTER 40: CHAPTER 40: WHY DO YOU TREAT ME THIS WAY

May Morgan screamed in fear, frantically hitting him, but Victor Grant was strong. He looked slim, yet his whole body was full of firm muscles. No matter how hard she struggled, she couldn’t break free.

At this moment, Victor Grant’s subordinate outside the door suddenly rushed in and whispered to Victor Grant, "B-big brother, Vincent Vance has surrounded this place with his men."

"Damn it!" Victor Grant cursed under his breath upon hearing that Vincent Vance had come and surrounded the entire hotel. He immediately sat up from the bed in frustration.

He knew well that he was no match for Vincent Vance; the best strategy was to flee.

"Didn’t expect you’re quite valuable in Vincent’s eyes," Victor Grant said, as he put on his shirt and took the jade pendant from May Morgan’s neck before leaving with his men.

"I’ve taken the thing; as for you, I’ll come taste you some other day."

After taking May Morgan’s jade pendant, Victor Grant didn’t forget to throw a teasing remark at her.

May Morgan gritted her teeth in anger at this real rogue. Compared to this bastard, Vincent Vance’s teasing seemed almost gentle.

Right after Victor Grant left, Vincent Vance rushed in with Jacob Jennings and others. Seeing that May Morgan was safe, Vincent’s tense expression eased a bit.

"Are you okay?" Vincent Vance wrapped May Morgan in his arms, checking her thoroughly from head to toe.

May Morgan was fine, but the jade pendant was taken by Victor Grant, which was not good. The pendant was her protection; in the hands of either the old master or Victor Grant, it was dangerous for her.

"I’m fine, but Victor Grant took my jade pendant."

With so many subordinates present, May Morgan didn’t dare speak loudly, so she discussed quietly with Vincent Vance.

Vincent paused, then tightened his hold on May Morgan: "It’s fine, I’ll help you get it back."

Victor Grant and Vincent Vance were adversaries now; getting the pendant back wouldn’t be easy. Moreover, there’s the old master in between, making the situation more troublesome.

On the way back, Vincent Vance asked May Morgan softly: "Why did Victor Grant suddenly take your jade pendant?"

May Morgan answered truthfully: "He heard from my sister that the pendant has the power to bring people back from the dead, probably got tempted. But I didn’t tell him the true secret of the pendant, so he snatched it at the last moment out of frustration."

Vincent’s original plan was to send May Morgan along with the pendant to a place far from Arthur Vance’s control after marriage. But now, things had changed unexpectedly, and he needed to alter his plans.

Especially after hearing May Morgan say that without the pendant, her life would be in danger, it strengthened his resolve to help her retrieve it.

"Don’t worry, I’ll help you get it back. You just go home and rest for now."

Vincent Vance took May Morgan back to Zenith Villa, coaxed her into the bedroom to rest, and after watching her fall asleep, he called Jacob Jennings over and instructed him: "Go bring that bitch Melanie Morgan here for me."

Jacob Jennings hesitated, looking at Vincent Vance in mild surprise: "Melanie Morgan was assaulted all night last evening, I’m afraid she’s receiving treatment at the hospital now."

Vincent’s face turned cold, a sinister gleam flashed in his eyes: "Better if she’s dead. Tell her to crawl over here as long as she’s still breathing."

"Got it." Seeing that the young master seemed genuinely angry, Jacob Jennings dared not waste any more words and promptly retreated.

An hour later, Melanie Morgan was dragged into Zenith Villa and tossed hard onto the living room floor.

Half a month ago, she entered Zenith Villa as the young mistress of the Vance Family, basking in glory. But in scarcely half a month, she was discarded like trash and thrown onto the floor; the stark contrast left her feeling exceedingly imbalanced.

All this was caused by that bitch May Morgan, and she wouldn’t let this go easily.

Melanie Morgan, weak, knelt before Vincent Vance, not daring to meet his eyes—this man once nearly became her husband, was now akin to an aloof deity, while she was just filthy mud beneath his feet.

"I ask you, did you tell Victor Grant the secret of the jade pendant?" Vincent Vance cast a cold glance at Melanie Morgan and questioned her sternly.

Melanie Morgan didn’t dare to lie, trembling as she explained, "I had no choice; if I didn’t tell the truth, Victor Grant would kill me."

"So you’re afraid he will kill you, yet you always think I’m a merciful person, right?"

Vincent lowered his head slightly, his cold, immeasurably indifferent eyes merely glancing over Melanie’s face, enough to scare her limp.

"Please, Vincent, don’t kill me, for the sake of our former engagement, I beg you not to kill me." Melanie Morgan trembled, mustering courage to grab Vincent’s pant leg, pleading.

Yet these words only fueled Vincent’s disdain towards her. He kicked her hard to the ground, his voice icy: "Melanie, our engagement was merely a trade of interests. Do you really think I ever had feelings for you?"

Melanie Morgan stared at Vincent, unwillingly asking: "So, are you marrying women of the Morgan Family merely for your own interests?"

Vincent looked at her disdainfully and thought it was too much trouble to explain.

"I’m giving you one last chance, help me get the pendant back, and I’ll spare your life. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being ruthless."

After speaking, he waved his hand at Jacob Jennings, signaling him to drag her out. Melanie Morgan looked at Vincent begrudgingly, asking one last question: "Vincent, in your eyes, does having the jade pendant qualify someone to be your wife? Is a wife just a tool for you to gain power in the Vance Family?"

Melanie’s words were cut short as Jacob Jennings directly dragged her out of Zenith Villa. Yet her sharp, profoundly unwilling voice still echoed clearly outside.

After dealing with Melanie, Vincent stood up from the sofa to check on May Morgan upstairs.

Recalling how she hid in his arms so timidly, a trace of pain flickered through Vincent’s eyes.

For the sake of a jade pendant, he had already dragged her into so much turmoil.

However, as he turned around, he found May Morgan standing at the corner of the stairs, staring blankly at him.

Even though separated by the long staircase, Vincent could see the fleeting look of disappointment in her eyes as she glanced at him.

She heard everything?

Vincent felt a bit anxious and stepped towards May, but May, frightened, quickly retreated to her bedroom.

The conversation between Melanie and Vincent earlier, May indeed heard every word clearly. She wasn’t a petty person, but Vincent’s attitude towards this matter left her unsettled.
