CHAPTER 44: CHAPTER 44: THIS STINGY MAN

"Adam Owens was hit by a car this morning." Monica Lambert repeated to her.

May Morgan’s hand holding the phone suddenly started to tremble. She felt something was off, but couldn’t quite pinpoint it at the moment. Forget it, she thought, better not to dwell on it for now.

"Was he seriously injured?" Speaking at home, May had already quickly dressed and was planning to head out.

Even though Adam had once done something to let her down, five years of feelings aren’t so easily discarded. Now that he had a car accident, she definitely had to go and see him.

"I don’t know; I just got a phone call this morning saying he was in a car accident and is now at St. Jude’s Hospital. I’m not very clear on the details."

At these words, May’s hand, which was about to open the door, suddenly paused again: "You mean, someone told you? You don’t know for yourself?"

She sensed something was odd, and now it seemed that this matter was indeed not simple.

Monica Lambert was rather straightforward and not very scheming, sometimes even easily swayed without thinking it through. She too received an anonymous message this morning saying Adam was hospitalized after a car accident, which is why she urgently came to inform May.

"Yes, I received a message this morning saying Adam was hospitalized. The sender also sent me pictures, and I looked closely; the car and the person lying there are indeed Adam."

Monica said this as she sent the set of received pictures to May’s phone. May opened them and carefully identified them, finding the photos were authentic.

Her heart sank heavily. Although intuitively she felt something was wrong, her concern for Adam prompted her to want to go and see him.

Knowing he’s really okay would put her mind at ease. As she opened her bedroom door and was about to go downstairs, the servant beside her quickly came to stop her:

May slightly tidied herself up and was about to push the door to go out. But just at the door, she was stopped by the bodyguard: "Ma’am, the young master said you can’t go out recently."

May knew Vincent Vance was acting in her best interest, but she was eager to see Adam. After pacing in front of the door a few times, she bluntly took out her phone to request Vincent: "Well, Vincent, can I go out to buy something?"

Vincent denied her request without thinking: "Write a list of what you want to buy and let the house staff buy it for you."

Grinding her hands dryly, May, a bit unwilling, said again: "I... some things are too private, not suitable for others to buy for me."

"Private? Are you planning on buying lingerie?" Vincent teased her with a faint smile: "You look best without clothes. Sexy lingerie doesn’t suit you; it wouldn’t be playful either."

May blushed with anger and hung up the phone on him right there. But within a minute, she shamelessly called him back: "There is another thing, Monica Lambert called in the morning saying there’s an issue at her home, and I’d like to go see."

Vincent really didn’t want her going out today. First, he needed to keep Adam’s situation from her; second, Victor Grant was recently eyeing the Jade Pendant and would likely harass May.

"I’ll have Jacob Jennings and others go check things out later; you don’t need to move. The bridal gown will be delivered this afternoon, along with the wedding ring, and the wedding plan needs your approval before finalizing."

This time, without waiting for May to continue, Vincent decisively hung up her call. May knew going out was out of the question, but she was really anxious about Adam’s safety. Helplessly, she sat worried on the sofa.

Feeling at a loss, the bodyguard outside suddenly shouted: "Second Master, why are you back again?"

"I left something here. I’ll take it and leave."

May turned her head in surprise and saw Logan Vance suddenly push the door open and walk in. Logan had been abroad for years and rarely returned, but she had seen him a few times.

The only impression she had of Logan was gentlemanly and easy to talk to.

"Second, Second Master!" Out of courtesy, May quickly stood up from the sofa and greeted Logan.

Logan smiled at her, and as he sat down on the sofa, he deliberately asked: "Do you like the wedding gift I gave you?"

Gift? May looked at Logan in surprise but soon replied with a smile, "I do."

Actually, she hadn’t seen the supposed wedding gift, but that wasn’t the point.

The point was Logan’s sudden appearance seemed to offer a glimmer of hope for whether she could go out.

"I’m glad you like it. I don’t really know what style you prefer, so I casually picked one for you. Try it on for size, and if it’s not suitable, I’ll have someone exchange it."

"No need, it’s fine, well..." May leaned toward Logan a bit, lowered her voice, and asked him: "Do you know about Adam’s car accident?"

Logan first looked baffled and then asked May with a face full of surprise: "Did my brother tell you?"

Your brother? Your brother would rather I not know about this, right?

Wait, does this mean Vincent knew about Adam’s car accident all along?

"Your brother knew about Adam’s car accident long ago?" May widened her eyes, her emotions somewhat agitated as she questioned.

Logan nodded lightly: "Yes, this morning he even notified Maxwell to take care of Adam at the hospital."

May’s face turned pale, and her chest ached, leaving her speechless.

The words Vincent said to her at Monica Lambert’s house were still fresh in her memory. He once said that, regarding Adam’s matter, he would not force her to forget, he would try to accept it, and would even allow minor contact between them.

But now, what on earth was he doing?

He clearly knew about Adam’s car accident beforehand, yet he deliberately avoided the issue when she called him. No, it’s not right; he never intended for her to know, or even to go out. He said it was to protect her, but really, it was because he feared she’d go see Adam.

Her fingers tightly clasped together, and May took a deep breath, suddenly looking across at Logan: "Second Master, can I ask a favor?"

Logan glanced at her, suddenly asking: "Do you want me to take you to see Adam?"

Before May could nod, Logan decisively refused her: "Impossible, my brother wouldn’t allow it unless you get past him."

It was precisely because she couldn’t get past Vincent that May sought Logan. But it seemed likely that nothing could be done here either.

"Really can’t be done?" May asked again, unwilling to give up.

Logan rose from the sofa, helplessly: "You know my brother’s temper, don’t put me in a difficult position."

"Alright, I’ll walk you out." Helping is a matter of discretion, not helping is just duty; May understood this principle, so she politely stood up from the sofa and accompanied Logan to the door.
