CHAPTER 69: CHAPTER 69: THIS MATTER MUST BE SUPPRESSED FOR NOW

"Can you tell me, who killed my grandma? Who killed her?" May Morgan’s eyes were swollen from crying, and she kept questioning Vincent Vance while grabbing his wrist.

How would Vincent know who killed May’s grandma? If he knew, he wouldn’t just be standing here trying to console her, but rather doing everything he could to find the murderer and seek revenge.

He grabbed May’s arm firmly, forcing her to look into his eyes, and promised her solemnly, "May, I promise you, no matter who harmed your grandma, I will make sure to settle this score for you."

After speaking, Vincent suddenly felt a pang of heartache as he embraced May tightly and vowed to her, "I said it before, your matters are my matters. Hurting your grandma is like hurting my family. Rest assured, I won’t let them get away with this. I won’t."

"But what if... it was your grandpa who ordered it?"

Grandma was always kind and never did evil. Relatives and friends had nothing bad to say about her. If she really had enemies, it must have been someone with a motive. She shouldn’t have given the Jade Pendant to Grandma. She had already thought about the possibility that leaving the Jade Pendant with Grandma would bring her fatal trouble, yet why did she act so foolishly? Why did she knowingly pursue it?

It was her. It was she who caused Grandma’s death.

"If it really was my grandpa, I won’t spare him. I will help you get justice!"

Without a moment’s hesitation, Vincent promised her with a grave and serious expression.

His honesty in his eyes finally pulled May back to some semblance of reason, giving her a glimmer of hope in her heart that had fallen into despair. She shouldn’t vent all her anger on him; he’s the only family she has left now.

"I’m sorry..."

After apologizing, May turned and walked toward the hospital, and Vincent approached and took her by the wrist, leading her to the morgue.

When the white sheet covering Grandma was lifted, Vincent quickly pulled May into his arms, hiding her face against his chest to shield her from the scene.

It was too horrific, truly too horrific.

A person who was just fine in the morning was suddenly tortured beyond recognition. May’s grandma had been stabbed six or seven times, and several fingers were chopped off. Clearly, she had suffered inhumane torture while alive.

Even someone accustomed to seeing life and death, Vincent’s heart couldn’t be at peace.

Murder is one thing, but torturous killing is unforgivable. Had the perpetrators tortured May’s grandma for that Jade Pendant?

May’s vision swam in red and she nearly fainted again. How could her gentle and kind grandma turn into this? How could those people do such a thing?

"Grandma, Grandma, it’s me, May! Look at me, open your eyes and look at me!"

With a crash, May kneeled in front of her grandma, grasping the sheet beneath her and crying out hoarsely.

Vincent couldn’t bear to watch any longer, worried she would cry herself hoarse. He bent down to lift her off the ground, "May, stop crying. The dead can’t come back."

May’s mind was blank; she couldn’t process anything. Anything Vincent said fell on deaf ears. All she knew was that her grandma, her only family, was gone just like that.

Regret washed over her. If she’d known it would end this way, she wouldn’t have returned with the Jade Pendant, let alone give it to Grandma. Now the Pendant’s gone, and Grandma was murdered. What should she do?

Vincent guided her out while signaling the doctors to return May’s grandma’s body back to the morgue.

"I’ve asked Director Lawson’s team to investigate. You’ll have answers about your grandma soon."

May gave Vincent a silent, trembling glance, saying nothing as she wobbled toward the hospital exit. The moment he placed his hand on her shoulder, her world turned black, and she fainted suddenly.

When she came to, she was already aboard the private jet Jacob Jennings had sent.

"I’m not going back. I’m staying until Grandma’s matter is fully investigated!"

Onboard the plane, May suddenly shouted to disembark. Seeing this, Vincent hurried to sit next to her, embracing her to calm her down, "Don’t be afraid. I’ve already informed your father about your grandma, and he will handle it."

"He’s useless! What do you expect him to do? Even if he knows my grandma was killed by your grandpa, he wouldn’t dare say a word. Let me go back. I want to see my grandma!" May exclaimed emotionally to Vincent once more.

Jacob Jennings shot a puzzled glance at Vincent. Seeing his grave expression, he refrained from interrupting until Vincent calmed the woman back to sleep. Only then did he softly inquire, "Young Master, did Miss May say it was the Patriarch who harmed her grandma? What’s going on?"

Vincent looked down at the woman in his arms and sighed slightly, "There’s no evidence yet. It’s merely May’s assumption."

Jacob gave Vincent a meaningful look before asking, "And if it really was the Patriarch, you..."

Hearing this, the fingers Vincent had resting on May’s shoulder clenched tightly as he spoke in a low, firm tone, "If it really was Grandpa, I won’t let it rest."

Jacob pondered for a moment and then cautiously said, "Indeed, if the Patriarch has disregarded life like this, and if we investigate, it might be an opportunity to seize control from the Vance Clan."

"...Enough."

Even though Jacob spoke the truth, Vincent knew that this time, helping May was entirely out of principle, out of his love for her. It had nothing to do with the Vance Clan or anyone, anything else.

Simply put, he had made a promise to her, and thus, he had to fulfill it.

Just after returning to Silverwood City, May fell into a fever, burning so fiercely that her skin felt scalding to the touch. Vincent had no choice but to call a doctor to administer an IV drip.

Despite the IV, May’s fever showed no signs of subsiding, which worried the doctor immensely. He remarked that unresolved matters of the heart were likely keeping her sick.

If her fever was allowed to persist, other complications might ensue, even leading to brain damage.

Watching anxiously as things unfolded, Jacob urged Vincent, "Young Master, perhaps let May’s father try to talk to her?"

Vincent shot him a cold glare, thinking his suggestions were worthless: "You know what Mason Morgan is like. Having him here would just upset May more."

Acknowledging that his ideas were all terrible, Jacob lowered his head in silence. As Vincent applied a cool compress to help lower May’s fever, he also instructed Jacob, "Keep a close eye on the Crestwood situation, and have Chief Lewis find out who the killer is as soon as possible."

Jacob gave Vincent another significant look and softly advised, "Young Master, we don’t currently have authority. Even if it’s confirmed that the Patriarch was behind it, what might you have to confront him?"
