CHAPTER 249: CHAPTER 249: PROPOSAL?

"Here is the food that I sneaked from the base. By the way, where is Ember? I haven’t seen her since coming here." There was a slight bashfulness in his voice that made Ivy’s heart tremble with guilt and fear.

"She... she..." Helena couldn’t bring herself to speak those words that were stuck in her throat.

"She died." Ivy’s heart was ripping apart as if an invisible hand was tearing it away. Yet she continued, looking in the direction where Jay’s voice had come.

"Ivy, don’t joke like that; you know I can’t live without my Ember... I am planning to propose to her. Or wait... is it that she knew about my proposal plan, and she wants to know all the details?" Toward the end, his voice sounded cheerful, but the nervousness in it made everyone aware of the dread rising in his heart.

Indeed... Jay was going to propose to Ember... He had also managed to make a fake ID for her so that she could settle in a good base and they could live a peaceful life.

Helena, Victor, Ivy, and Felix thought that it was a good idea; as long as Ember was away from them, with her super strength, she could work hard and not worry about people hunting her down.

Only Ember was hesitating; she would rather not leave her family while they were in desperate need of help and so much danger was lurking around them.

Yet she couldn’t resist Jay’s persistence and her love for him.

"Ember? Ember, come out! I will tell you everything... please come out! You wanted to know the proposal details, right? I will tell it!" Jay yelled, and his gaze darted around until it landed on a slightly trembling cardboard box.

His eyes lit up, and he rushed toward the cardboard and opened it in delight. "Ember, you scared me...."

Ivy closed her eyes and sobbed like a cornered animal.

"Ember..." Jay’s voice trembled as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Even though Ember had turned into a zombie, he still recognized her.

Grr.

A low, anguished growl escaped from Ember’s mouth. Even though it resembled other zombies... for some reason... Ivy seemed to hear the raw pain hidden in it.

"No... No... Ember...how did you... who did it... "

"It was because of me," Ivy shouted, attracting Jay’s attention. "Kill me, Jay. She died because I pushed her in front of a zombie horde! I was jealous of her! So I...ugh!"

A strong hand wrapped around Ivy, knocking the air from her lungs, making her gasp, but she didn’t struggle; instead, she let Jay kill.

’Let me die... as long as I die, all the misfortunes looming over my family will be over!’

"Jay, what are you doing! Stop!"

"Jay, she didn’t push Ember at all!"

The voice filled with desperation and anger overlapped, but Ivy only smiled as if she had achieved what she wanted.

Just when she could feel her life slipping out of her body, a low guttural growl echoed, attracting Jay’s attention.

The strong hand slowly lost its grip, and Ivy’s heart was filled with dread.

"Kill me, Jay! If you don’t, your Ember’s sacrifice would end up as nothing! Kill me!"

Grr!

Ember growled again, as if chiding Ivy to stop speaking, and Ivy’s eyes turned watery. She bit her lips and started to sob loudly as words laced with hate rolled off her tongue.

"Kill me, Jay! Please! Please... for Ember..."

"Ivy, snap out of it!" Felix’s voice, laced with fatigue and anger, echoed in the stunned silence.

Jay’s hand vanished, and Ivy heard his sobbing voice, "You can understand me, Ember?"

Grr!

The growl was still laced with anger and dissatisfaction, and Jay’s almost resigned yet slightly happy voice echoed,

"Baby... I am sorry; I didn’t mean to! I promise to never harm Ivy. It was my mistake!"

Grr! Grr!

"Yes! Yes! I was wrong! I will listen to you!"

Ivy sobbed and cried; she couldn’t bring herself to face zombie Ember... a human who, even after turning into a zombie, wanted to take care of her.

Just what had Ivy even done to deserve her?

"This is a miracle! Our baby can still understand us!"

"We can bring her to her senses! Or maybe an antidote could still cure her!"

Ivy closed her eyes in dismay.

Will it matter? If they stay by her side... they will turn into a zombie too. Or worse... they will die.

Yet she could only murmur,

"I am sorry... I am sorry, Ember..."

Because even till the end of her life... Ember and Jay didn’t end up together. And all of it was because of her.

"I am sorry... I am sorry, Ember..." Ivy murmured as beads of sweat slowly formed on her forehead.

"Just what kind of nightmare is she in? Why can’t she break through it?" Helena asked worriedly, her hand clutching Ivy’s cold hand, as worry was etched on her face.

"Mom... my sister hasn’t even met me and is already seeing a nightmare that involves me... do you think she loves me the most among all the siblings?" Ember asked in an excited voice; her eyes couldn’t look away from the beautiful pink-haired woman.

The skin as pale as the moon, lips as red as cherries, and pink hair just like cotton candy.

Ember had to resist the urge to bite Ivy’s cheeks or kiss her.

Just by one look, Ember could confirm that Ivy was an obedient and sweet kind of sister.

’No one told me that my lost sister looks so beautiful! Ah!! If I kiss her... would she find it strange? But I have seen other eldest sisters kiss their younger sisters! If she isn’t okay... I will do it when she is sleeping... hm! I am so smart!’
